| “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” Eph. 4:31-32 Lord Jesus, sometimes I read this passage, and so many others like it, and I’m tempted to think: 1.This is impossible, except for people like Corrie ten Boom. 2. It’s an exaggeration just to make a point. Or, 3. It’s only going to happen in heaven. But that’s just my weakness, defensiveness, and, at times, hopelessness, speaking. This is the life to which you have called us, and it is the way you relate to us every single day. Thank you for never grating on the inside or becoming “huffy” on the outside. You don’t roll your eyes in disgust, weaponize being hurt, or withdraw into condescending silence. Jesus, I am so glad you’re not capable of the things of which I am competent. You don’t ever try to justify unloving actions; you justify us by grace through faith. Indeed, if the Gospel wasn’t true we would surely despair. Jesus, thank you for remaining kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving when we deserve the opposite. One Day we will be as loving as you, for our Father will complete his work in us (Phil. 1:6; Rom. 8:28-30). Until then, you don’t give us “a pass” for the sinful ways we think, speak, and act. You give us yourself. You convict us without condemning us, and correct our hearts without crushing our spirits. Jesus, you know we are weak, but you also know we are yours. “We need Thee every hour,” including this one. So Very Amen. |
