Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Every Door Knows Jesus’ Name SCOTTY SMITH “We make our plans; but the LORD determines our steps” (Prov.16:9). “Any door Jesus opens nobody else can shut; and every door Jesus shuts no one can pry open” (Rev. 3:7). “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Don’t even lean on your own understanding—much less trust it. Acknowledge Jesus in all things all the time, and he will make your paths straight, hold you fast, at times carry you, and get you Home on time.” (Paraphrase of Prov. 3:5-6)   Lord Jesus, thank you for being both a macro and a micro-manager. This doesn’t make us robots; it makes us yours and reveals you to be our loving Master—not our co-dependent masseur. Our choices aren’t sovereign, only you are. Whew! Hallelujah! Bodacious! Thank you. Every door knows your name and they all swing on the hinges of your pleasure and purposes. Can you really trust you with all our heart? We have plenteous reasons to do so. Jesus, you created us for your glory, graced us with full salvation, and are at work in all things for our good, and are actively making all things new. You aren’t “pulling for us” from afar; you are shepherding us right here and right now. Jesus give us your beyond-all-understanding peace in this season of life. When we’re confused by options, free us to trust your occupied throne, active engagement, and loving heart. We are standing in grace; not standing before 3 doors of which two lead to disaster and only one leads to your delight. Again, the Scriptures tell us you are the Door-Master—not our distance cheerleader. Never ever let us forget that life is about trusting the perfect Lord—not making the perfect decision. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Our Oxymorons SCOTTY SMITH  “Peter took Jesus aside and began rebuking him. ‘Never, Lord!’” (Matt.16:22)    Lord Jesus, if an oxymoron is a couplet of contradictory terms—like deafening silence, jumbo shrimp, planned spontaneity, or peace offensive—then the ultimate oxymoron was spoken by the Apostle Peter. “Never, Lord!” Those two words simply don’t belong together. Yet I have a history of responding to you in a similar fashion like Peter.    One of the first ways I contradicted you Jesus was when you told me my need of salvation is so great only the Gospel of your grace could save me—not my contrite striving, beating myself up, good works, or vain promises of do more try harder. Whether by pride or unbelief, whenever we do not/cannot believe you are 100% of our righteousness, we are saying, “Never, Lord! You haven’t done quite enough for me.”    And when you assure me that your grace will be sufficient for me in hard relationships and challenging stories, and yet I persist in unbelief and in the insufficiency of my self-sufficiency, my actions are saying, “Never, Lord! Maybe for the Apostle Paul, but your grace won’t be quite enough for me.”    And when you tell me you created and redeemed me to live and love missionally—to invest my time, talent, and treasure in the advancing of the Gospel—yet I persist in living a micro-narrative of personal peace and self-fulfillment, I am saying, “Never, Lord! You can’t use someone like me. I’ve got other fires to put out first and things to put into place before I retire.”    And when you promise you are at work in all things for my good, yet I keep on complaining, resenting, and blaming—I’m declaring, “Never, Lord! My situation is different than most. You can’t/won’t work for my good in this.”    Jesus, thank you for your daily mercy and patience with me. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Doing Everything in Love by Jesus’ Love SCOTTY SMITH  “Only faith expressing itself in love matters” (Gal.5:6). “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Cor. 16:14). “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). “Your love (Lord) is better than life”  (Psalm 63:3). “Perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18). “Love never fails” (1 Cor. 13:8).    Lord Jesus, I can certainly think about you without thinking about my spiritual father, Jack Miller; but I never think of Jack without thinking of you. No one taught me more about the Gospel, your grace, and a life of love than Jack. Whatever the provocation or situation, I can still hear Jack saying, “Scotty, time to mount another love offensive.”    That is (to paraphrase Jack,) “When life is unfair, circumstances are hard, relationships are messy—instead of getting defensive, go on the offensive. Mount a love offensive.”    Repay harshness with kindness, criticism with humility, indifference with curiosity, coolness with the warmth of Jesus’ love, a history of being failed with a new history of out-loving, out-kind-ing, “out-grace-ing” others all the way Home.    This is so counterintuitive, hard to do, and takes wisdom in more complex situations, Jesus. We are desperate and expectant of your help. May your incomparable, unwavering, inexhaustible, never-failing love change and free us, Lord. Take us further into its height, depth, width, and breadth (Eph.3:18-19). We don’t want our traumas and triggers, heart wounds and real challenges to hold more mastery over us than your grace and Spirit.    Jesus, we love you and others only because you first loved us and still love us. Re-humble, re-gladded, and re-free us to love in our easy, normal, messy, and impossible situations. May we prove the wonders of your love and the sufficiency of your grace all the way Home. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Life Isn’t About a Fountain of Youth But a Fountain of Grace SCOTTY SMITH   “We do not lose heart. Though we are outwardly wasting away, we are inwardly being renewed day by day—for you will finish the good work you began in us. Our light and momentary troubles will end and be replaced with an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (pp 2Cor.4:16-17; Phil.1:6)   Lord Jesus thank you for this honest and hopeful perspective about life between your resurrection and return. To acknowledge we are “outwardly wasting away” isn’t pessimistic, but realistic. It’s to live with humility, wisdom, and joy towards the Day of all things new.    There has never been a “fountain of youth”—in Florida or anywhere else. But in the Gospel, we have a “fountain of grace”—one that runs deep, sweet, and wide all the way into the new heaven and new earth. Hallelujah! Getting older isn’t fun or for the weak of heart, but knowing the Spirit is constantly at work to make us like you changes everything—including our priorities, price tags, and how we weigh stuff.    The Gospel is the only scale that really matters. As Paul states, the blessings of eternal glory far outweigh the “light and momentary troubles” we experience in this life. Help us believe, rest, and rejoice in this good news more than we ever have before. Our best days, years, and forever are in front of us. This isn’t “pie in the sky” it’s grace in our hearts. We groan now but will laugh forever.    Lastly Jesus, thank you for the 3 we’s and the 1 us Paul used in this passage. Knowing you gives us the most endearing and enduring friendships we could ever hope for. Trouble-shared, stress-tested, grace-forged friendships will last forever. We who are growing weaker together in life will be glorified together in the life to come. Hallelujah! This is sweet, exquisite, and so very awesome. So Very Amen.
