Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Old Heart, New Heart, In-Process Heart, Perfected Heart SCOTTY SMITH Our Need: " The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand, heal, and transform it?" (par Jer.17:9). God's Provision:  " I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh." (Ezek. 36:26) The Process: Abba, "give me an undivided heart, that I may live in awe of your name." (Ps.86:11).    Heavenly Father, your provision of a new heart has never been dearer to me. You made good on that promise when you raised us from spiritual death, hid our lives in Christ, and put the new heart in us. But our new heart will only be a perfected heart the Day you call us home. Until then we will need your daily mercies, transforming grace, and the gift of Gospel-savoring friends.    I get weary of knowing you in part, loving in part, and being partly like Jesus. Thank you, a gazillion times over, for your commitment to finish your work in each of your children (Phil.1:6). We will be as much like Jesus as a justified, adopted, glorified child of yours can possibly be (1Jn.3:1-3). Whew! and Hallelujah!    Your promise of making my divided, wandering, under-believing-the-Gospel heart being 100% like Jesus keeps me going, Father. To be specific, I crave a kind heart, a tender heart, a "sweet-heart." A heart that's not easily offended, divided in affection, or even slightly judgmental. I long to be more restful than resentful, more compassionate than controlling, more hope-filled than trauma-triggered— more like Jesus more of the time. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH This Isn't the Time to Play Chapter-and-Verse Bible Bingo SCOTTY SMITH "The Lord laughs at the wicked for he knows their day is coming." Ps. 37:13    Lord Jesus, forgive my under-believing, over-vexing, self-centered thoughts. I can be like Martha asking you, "Don't you care, Lord?" The truth is, only you care, Jesus. For you " control the course of world events; you depose kings and set up others" (Dan 2:21)—you also feed birds and dress fields in Designer beauty. No one cares more about Iran, Ukraine, Gaza, and America—and everywhere else sin and evil do their worst.    In a most sobering and profound way, you will get the "last laugh," Jesus—a laughter that fills the courts of heaven now, and echoes through the history of redemption. On the calendar of your holiness and grace, you have set the perfect date for the eradication of all wickedness and evil. You're not slow in keeping your promise to bring judgment. You are merciful in keeping your commitment to redeem a family as numerous as stars, sand, and dust (2 Pet. 3:9). Thank you.    Help us be way more mindful of your persecuted church, vulnerable children and the elderly in the middle east than rising gas prices, falling stock, and political madness in America. Now isn't the time to play chapter-and-verse Bingo about which Scriptures prophesy war in Iran. Now is the time to trust, love, and serve you Jesus.    Take our little prayers and mobilize legions of angels to do your bidding and work throughout the world (Heb.1:14). Take our 5 pieces of bread and 2 fish and feed multitudes with the Gospel and bread for the belly. Replace our fear with faith, our anger with love, and the odor of our self-interest with the aroma of your Kingdom. May Gospel-kindness and grace-generosity go viral. So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH 5 Gospelicious Rhetorical Questions SCOTTY SMITH 1 . If God is for us, who can ever be against us? (Rom.8:31) 2. Since Jesus died for us, who can condemn us ? (Rm.8:31) 3. Can we trust God to grace-gift us with everything? (Rm.8:32) 4. Who can bring accusations against God's children? (Rom.8:33) 5. What can separate us from Jesus' great love? (Rom.8:34)    Heavenly Father, I love these 5 questions because they're rhetorical, not trick questions. All the answers are implied and supplied by the Gospel. But here's a non-rhetorical question: What percentage of your everlasting, lavish, measureless love for us in Jesus do we actually understand and enjoy? I'll guess 07%, but that might prove to be too generous a guess.    You gave Jesus up for us on the cross—of course we can trust you for everything else we actually need. You created us, chose, bought, redeemed, and delight in us—who cares what anybody else thinks, says, or feels about us? You clothed us in Jesus' righteousness—so though many may accuse and try to condemn us, it's just Satan's futile attempt to undercut our confidence in the Gospel and rob us of our joy and peace.    Father, forgive us for giving any other voice more power over our hearts than yours. Our hearts are your domain and delight, and you are gloriously jealous for them. Thank you. Through the hardest parts of life and the most joyful ones—in the crazy-making seasons and the oasis-like stretches—in the stories that test us and the relationships that break us … you are our Abba and we are your beloved children. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH It's More Than A Cute Acrostic SCOTTY SMITH    "The older brother was angry and refused to go in to the party being thrown for his 'worthless estate-squandering' younger brother. His father came out and said to him… 'Son, you're always with me, and everything I have is yours .'" (Paraphrase of Luke 15:28–31)     Heavenly Father, we're all familiar with acrostics such as RIP = Rest In Peace, TGIF = Thank God It's Friday, FMO = Fear of Missing Out, and BFF = Best Friends Forever. But I hereby create a new one that might be tattoo worthy. EIHIY = Everything I Have Is Yours—5 words you spoke to your ungrateful, self-righteous, heart-disconnected older son. You speak the same words to us in the Gospel.    As with the "older brother," you are committed to free us from our self-centeredness, Gospel-amnesia, and gross ingratitude. You say to us in our union with Christ: "My child, I love you with an incomparable, everlasting, unwavering love. Nothing can exhaust my mercies or deplete my grace for you. I don't endure or "put up with you." I greatly delight in you, I am committed to quiet your heart with my love, and I will never stop rejoicing over you" (Zeph.3:14-17). Hallelujah, and thank you, Father.    Because you have hidden our lives in Christ we have all the legal rights and personal delights of your firstborn Son. We already possess the fullness of forgiveness, the righteousness of Christ, and a place in your family and heart. We are co-heirs (not sub-heirs) with Jesus of everything (Rom.8:17).    And you haven't just secured an inheritance for us (1Pet.1:3-5) you actually call us your inheritance (Eph.1:11)—that's how dear we are to you. Our destiny is life in the new heaven and new earth, full Jesus-likeness, wiped tears, and redeemed pain. Thank you, Abba. Hallelujah for EIHIY , and So Very Amen.
