Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Jesus Specializes in Tranquility, Contentment, and Peace SCOTTY SMITH   “ A tranquil, contented, peaceful heart gives life and healing to the body. But on the other end of the spectrum—a comparing, envious, malcontented heart will rot your bones.” (pp Prov.14:30)    Lord Jesus, what a shocking contrast—a thriving heart or rotting bones. Hmmm… which shall I choose? As they say, that’s a “no-brainer.” And yet, it’s not a “piece of cake”—for the battle in our hearts and for our hearts will continue until you take us Home.    On May 1, 2026, what am I most “malcontented” about? It may change a month from now—but American politics is right up there at the top. Then there’s the reality of the aging process—which exposes my vanity and vulnerability. And though I preach against holding onto vain regrets, I occasionally pick up a couple of my dust-collecting backpacks of “what if’s,” “dang it’s,” and “if only’s.” The paradox is I always regret rehearsing my regrets.    So how can we gain and maintain a tranquil, peaceful heart? There’s no pill, formula, or “easy fix”—and only in heaven will we enjoy a perfected, 100% peace-overflowing heart. But until then, I know of no other way than spending rich, intentional time adoring and communing with you, Jesus. Not just reading really good faith-fueling books and listening to awesome podcasts—but being with you until my heart is encouraged, my Gospel-sanity is restored, my repentances are quick, and I’m more “delightful” to be around.    Even as I write this prayer and tap my fingers across the keyboard, you are encouraging me, Jesus. I need the Gospel every day because I forget it every day. May my May be filled not just with May Flowers, but with the peace of knowing I belong to you, Jesus, remembering you’ve “got the whole world in your hands,” and resting in your declaration that you are presently making all things new—including me. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Heaven Isn’t a Merely a Metaphor Or Adjective SCOTTY SMITH “From his throne, Jesus declared, ‘I am making all things new!’ … Creation, like our bodies, will be resurrected, healed, and brought into the fullness of beauty and goodness. Our tears will be wiped and their pain redeemed… The kings of the earth will bring their splendor into the New Jerusalem (Rev.21:1-4, 24)… Abba’s children will reign as curators, cultivators, and cherishers of the new heaven and new earth. God will be worshiped, adored, and served forever.” (Paraphrase Rev.22:3-5; 2 Cor.5:17).    Dear Jesus, I have had so many bone-headed, sentimental, boring notions of heaven. In my childhood, heaven seemed more like a metaphor and an adjective than an actual place. My generation actually created “Heavenly Ham.”  But heaven will be 100,000 times more knee-buckling and heart-enthralling than we can imagine.    For starters, we will see you as you are, and we will become 100% like you (Hallelujah!).  Every relationship will be perfect. Every longing for intimacy you’ve written into our DNA will be fulfilled and over-filled. We will finally love as you love as you deserve. Every tear will be wiped, and the pain of every tear will be redeemed.    Jesus, because you are making all things new— not all new things, there will be a lot of continuity with this world and the world to come. Places dear to us now will become even dearer. Everything broken will become a better version of its original, for your Story is a story of redemption not replacement. Truly, Eden was just a hint, whisper, foretaste of things to come.    So, what is the “ splendor of the kings” and what will we do with all those accumulated treasures? As your Word suggests, the best of the art, culinary flavors, culture markers, music, artifacts, truth, goodness, and beauty of every nation will be celebrated and blended to reveal even more of your glory. It’s hard to wrap our heads around that, but not hard to say, “Thank you!”    We will “reign” forever as worshipers, builders, adventurers, creators, and “enjoyers” New Creation culture. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH All of Us Are Rebuke-Worthy and Grace-Needy SCOTTY SMITH    “ Jesus began to teach the disciples that he—’the Son of Man’ must suffer many things, be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribe; and be killed and rise from the dead three days later. He spoke clearly, not vaguely. Peter was shocked, so he took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, Jesus rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” (pp Mark 8:31–33)    Lord Jesus, I used to read this story with a bit of relief, thinking—“at least I’m not as clueless as Peter. I’d never try to keep Jesus from the cross; and I’d never, ever take Jesus aside and presume to correct and rebuke him.”    But in your kindness Jesus, you have shown me the ways I’m just as rebuke-worthy and grace-needy as Peter. How do I downplay your cross? When do I try to rebuke you, Jesus? When I wallow in self-contempt and shame—or default to performance-based spirituality—I deny your cross. From the cross you said, “It is finished!” Not, “I did my part; now y’all do yours.” When I indulge a critical spirit, keep a record of other people sins, and fertilize my resentment—I deny your cross. Jesus, you didn’t just die for me; but for others as well. How dare I claim to rest in your cross and grace and yet deny others a taste of the only possible haven and hope for sinners? When I grumble about your ways and timing, don’t stay grateful for everything you have already given me, and don’t believe you really are working for my good in all things—that’s the equivalent of me taking you aside and rebuking you, Jesus.    “O to grace, how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be”—including this day, Jesus. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Don’t Settle for a “Peaceful, Easy Feeling” SCOTTY SMITH  “As we fill and fix our thoughts on the Lord, he brings us and keeps us into a state of perfect peace.” Isa. 26:3    Lord Jesus, you haven’t promised us a storm-less, hassle-free, stress-empty life. But you have promised to bring us into a rich experience of your circumstance-transcending peace and to keep us there. Hallelujah for your keeping power, Jesus. We’re prone to wander, but you’re more prone and successful at reeling us in and bringing us back to where we belong—in vital intimacy with yourself and the peace only you can give.    You are the Prince of Peace, not just the dispenser of the “peaceful, easy feeling” the Eagles sing about. Indeed, Jesus, you promise to keep us in perfect peace—not in semi, partial, or wanna-be peace. You give us a peace that passes, surpasses, and even bypasses our ability to make sense of things—including your ways and timing (Phil.4:7). Thank you.    All we have to do is mine the riches of the Gospel and keep in mind the wonders of your love. Jesus, at times this is really hard to do, so help us. Our thought life is often like a bunch of wild horses—running here, there, and everywhere. So, corral our thinking by the power of your Holy Spirit. Bring our thoughts back into the perspective-giving, heart-freeing, peace-fueling reality of who you are. Jesus, your beauty, goodness, and truth should be our primary and precious preoccupation.    And show us the ways we sabotage our experience of your peace by what we look at, listen to, and over-indulge. Today, tomorrow, and forever—Jesus, bring us back this glorious state of heart: “ Whom or what do I have in heaven but you, Jesus? You make heaven ‘heavenly.’ And being with you, there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you” (pp of Ps.73:25). Expel our fears, mute the devil’s lies, and supersize our love for you, Jesus.
