Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Prescription and Provision for a Relationally Rich Weekend SCOTTY SMITH    “Avoid quarreling, be gentle, show true humility toward everyone …  for we ourselves were once foolish… hated by others and hating one another.    BUT when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he generously poured out on us through Jesus Christ our Savior.” Titus 3:1-4    Heavenly Father, this is a stunning, whole-life-shaping, relationship defining passage. We’re not to take our relational clues from those around us, but from the Gospel of your grace—from Jesus, himself. You love us generously, so much so, you give us all the grace-capital we need to love to your glory.    Our “ Gospel-portfolio” includes: Christ for us—our perfect salvation. Christ in us—our hope of glory. Christ over us—our peace in a chaotic cosmos. Christ under us—our safe collapsing zone. Us in Christ—our “it’s almost too good to be true” enrichment.    Abba, your “goodness and loving kindness” are 10,000 times more worthy of our attention than obsessing over how anyone else has, is, or will relate to us. This doesn’t make us immune to how people treat to us; it makes us yours and that makes all the difference in any and every relationship.    Because you have washed us and are renewing us by the Holy Spirit, we can “avoid quarreling, be gentle, and live humbly.” This sounds supernatural because it is. You have done for us what we could never do for ourselves. That’s why it’s a Gospel of grace—not of our grit. Likewise, you do in us and through us what we can’t/won’t do on our own. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Dabbling, Frittering, Puttering … Or These “Onesies”? SCOTTY SMITH “ One thing I know. I was blind but now I see!” (Jn.9:25) – a Healed Man. “ One thing I do. I live heavenward” (Phil.3:13) – the Apostle Paul. “ One   thing I desire of the LORD—to gaze at his beauty” (Ps.27:4) – King David. “ One thing is necessary—intimacy and communing with me” (Lk.10:42) – Jesus.    Lord Jesus, the world has never been more full of options—things to choose from, places to visit, ways to spend our day, skills, and pesos—hobbies to learn, pastimes to pass the time with, etc. They’re not all bad—not at all, but the quartet of “one-thing-verses” above calls us to some fresh Gospel-intentionality.    Like the blind man you healed—there’s a lot we don’t know, but there’s one thing that should define us more than anything else—the assurance of our salvation. Jesus, more than “just” healing our spiritual blindness—you also gave us a new heart and a new life, your perfect righteousness and citizenship in heaven, a new story and a future that will put AWE into “ AWEsome.” Hallelujah, and thank you. This puts everything else into context and perspective.    We don’t want to spend the rest of our days dabbling, frittering, and puttering around with many things. Like Paul living heavenward, David gazing at your beauty, and Mary communing with you —we want to live as those who are consumed with one thing . Jesus, we want to know, love, and serve you with our whole bandwidth, every breath, and entire being. Why not? Why not now?    May our schedules, joys, and choices demonstrate you are our treasure and hope. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Are We Just Winding Down Or “Worshipping Up”? SCOTTY SMITH  “We don’t lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So, we don’t fix our eyes on what is seen, but on what is unseen. What is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Cor. 4:16-18    Lord Jesus, this passage has become one of my “home room” and “home run” portions of your Word—for it gives me both comfort and joy.  Paul’s honesty about growing physically weaker and his excitement about ongoing spiritual renewal are compelling to me in June 2026. We can have aching joints, tired brain cells, and various health challenges AND grow bigger, peace-filled, hope-smitten, Gospel-hearts. That’s what I want, Jesus. That’s what I want all the way Home. How is that possible?    Paul tells us that whatever captures our gaze, seizes our attention, captures our curiosity, fills our imagination, preoccupies our thinking— these are the things that make the difference between growing fearful and growing faith-filled—the difference between winding down and “worshipping up”—the difference between a quest for an imaginary fountain of youth and actually living in the ocean of your grace.    Jesus, free me and my friends to be more like the aging apostle Paul, whose “light and momentary troubles” (2 Cor. 11:21-33) didn’t depress him but delighted him about what is to come. In all his aging, suffering, and “outward wasting”—steady inward daily renewal gained momentum. Though his physical eyesight grew dimmer, his vision of you and our coming life in the new heaven and new earth grew cataract free and laser sharp. May the same be true of us, Lord Jesus. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Can We Handle This Much Joy? SCOTTY SMITH    “ You know I (John the Baptist) have been saying that Jesus is the Messiah; I’m merely the messenger. He’s the Point, I’m the pointer. He’s the Light, I’m a candle stick holder. He’s the Bridegroom, and he’s come to make us his bride. The joy of making much of Jesus is now mine. Jesus must become greater in everyone’s eyes and hearts. I now gladly recede and ‘ride off into the sunset.’” (Paraphrase of John 3:28-30)    Dear Jesus, I’m not desiring John’s wardrobe of camel’s hair clothing and diet of locusts and wild honey (Matt. 3:4); but I crave his joy: The joy of making much of you. The joy of treasuring you above everything. The joy of knowing all history and the whole Bible is a revelation of your glory and grace. You can’t get any “greater” but we’re probably alive to about .07% of your glory and grace, goodness and beauty, love and joy. We long for the other 99.93%.    There is also great joy in realizing just how much you make of us. It’s one thing to have joy about going to heaven when we die. But to know we are now and forever your beloved Bride—that creates mega-joy, humbling wonder, and hope-filled living. Hallelujah, and thank you.    Jesus, we also have great joy as we anticipate the Day you will finish making all things new—the Day your glory will fill the earth as the waters cover the sea. For on that Day all sin and death, evil and illness, knowing in part and loving in part will be eradicated. We will see you as you truly are, and we will finally be 100% like you (1Jn.3:1-3). Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Eye-Opening, Heart-Centering, Faith-Fueling Grace SCOTTY SMITH    “Don’t be afraid, Gehazi! There are more on our side than on theirs!” Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled  with horses and chariots of fire. 2 Kings 6:16-17    Lord Jesus, like Elisha’s servant, we too have seasons when the odds, hard circumstances, and personal struggles seem stacked against us. We need the same eye-opening grace you gave Gehazi (Eph.1:18-19).    Let us see, feel, know you are with us and for us. Living inside of us, you are far greater than anyone and everything against us (1Jn.4:4); and our “ in-Christ-ness” is 10,000 times superior to our “in-mess-ness.” With you on your throne above us, and your arms around and under us, we’ll never be outnumbered.    Alongside that, your Spirit is constantly at work in us, and you deploy angels on our behalf more often than we realize (Heb.1:14, 13:2). They don’t ride up on “chariots of fire,” but our Gospel-friends also provide your comfort, encouragement, and hope at just the right time (2Cor.7:4).    Jesus, help us embrace our vulnerability and weakness as opportunities to rely on you. Mute the voice of “the accuser of the brethren,” who attacks us in our weariness. Silence our shame, fear, anxieties-a-plenty by your singing over us, great delight in us, and constant intercession for us (Zeph.3:14-17). Thank you, Jesus. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Hallelujah for the God of Romans 8:28! SCOTTY SMITH  “We know God works for the good in all things, for those who love him—those called according to his purpose…  to be conformed to the image of his Son.” Rom. 8:28-29    Heavenly Father, I don’t know of one verse in your entire Word that’s more miss-applied, under-believed, totally loved than Romans 8:28. I chose those three categories because I’ve experienced each.    As a young believer, I thought Romans 8:28 guaranteed a life of minimal pain, maximum delight, and magnificent outcomes— IF I just loved you enough. But that led me to question my love for you when hard things happened in my life. But Romans 8:28 promises something so much better than the “American Dream.” It declares you are at work in all things to make us like Jesus—and there is no greater privilege, currency, or outcome.    We can misuse Romans 8:28 on others. We do that when we use it to “silence their whining,” or aren’t willing to enter their pain—inadvertently applying Romans 8:28 like it’s shot of Novocain or a dose of laughing gas. But deadening pain isn’t validating, honoring, and stewarding our pain—three things the Gospel calls us to do.    How do we disuse or under-believe Romans 8:28? Again, speaking from personal experience—when I don’t regularly (daily) ask you: “How Abba, are you/will you use this hard relationship, unwelcome providence, shocking turn of events, or unfair/unjust situation for your glory and my good?”    I also ignore (or reject) Romans 8:28 when instead of looking to you for a redemptive outcome, I start blaming and shaming others for my misfortune and misery, or I fall/jump into self-contempt—and I always end up regretting that.    But blessed, loving, holy, and gracious Abba, I do love Romans 8:28,  I really do want to become more like Jesus.
