Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH A Gospel Cover-Up SCOTTY SMITH   “ Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.” Prov. 17:9    Lord Jesus, rarely does the phrase “cover-up” imply something good is going on. But there’s a way of handling one another’s failures, sins, and weaknesses that is profoundly good. There is such a thing as a “ gospel cover-up” and I want to get much better at it. So as I meditate on this Scripture, hear my confession and my prayers.    Forgive me when I choose to uncover and weaponize old offenses. Whether it’s in a “discussion” with my wife, or in a vulnerable moment with a friend, or in a setting where I want to minimize my sin, gain an advantage, or get control. That’s really immature and insecure of me.    Forgive me when I repeat someone’s offense under the guise of seeking prayer for them. In reality, I am gossiping, and gossip is like “delicious morsels” (Prov.18:8) to those who share and receive news about someone else’s weaknesses. How insidious and unloving is that?    Forgive me when I keep a record and rehearse the ways people have hurt me—feeding my self-righteousness, fueling my anger, and fermenting my desire for revenge. That is really ugly, Jesus—it’s anti-grace.    Forgive me when I repeat my regrets, sins, and failures to myself—choosing to indulge in self-contempt and accept the devil’s condemnation more than I believe and relish the Gospel. When I do this, I rob you of glory, Jesus, and I rob my heart of peace and joy. That’s not okay—especially the first part.    Jesus, you have “covered” and carried away our sins forever. Hallelujah and thank you! You will never use our sins against us—never, ever. You don’t have amnesia; you have grace upon grace. We worship and adore you, Jesus. So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Loving the “Least of These” More of the Time SCOTTY SMITH    Jesus to each of us: “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me.” … “Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? … “And the King will say…”When you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ Matt 25:34-40    Lord Jesus, this image of the Day of your return is profound, convicting, and beautiful. It doesn’t look like a World Cup Championship celebration, or a confetti-in-the-air parade for returning heroes, or even the largest and loudest praise gathering on record.    As you describe this last Day scene, you will welcome a mass of Kingdom– inheritors into the new heaven and new earth. Such an honor is only inherited, because we could never earn  it. The best things in life are received, not achieved—which highlights the glory of your grace. Hallelujah, and thank you.    We will be astonished, humbled, and grateful on that Day—as we should be even now. Shocked that sacrificial love for neighbors, strangers, foreigners—even our enemies, is something you take very personally. You personally experience it when we serve the weak and imprisoned, strangers and aliens, widow and orphans. This isn’t a metaphor; it’s a miracle. It a most intimate way, we are directly serving you, Jesus when we slow down, get low and are generous towards the least and the lost, the vulnerable and lonely—those who can give us nothing… but you.    Hands lifted to you in corporate worship is one thing. Hands extended in compassion and care to people we typically avoid or stereotype, pre-judge or fear is an altogether different thing—a Gospel-thing. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH A Prayer for Preaching the Gospel to Ourselves SCOTTY SMITH   “ I am eager to preach the gospel to you for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” (Rom.1:15–16)    Lord Jesus, we’re not all called to a vocational ministry of preaching the Gospel; but we are all called to a lifestyle of hearing, believing, living, and sharing the Gospel. Until you glorify us, we will continue to need the truth and grace of the Gospel. So here we go.    Our worst and best don’t define us— you do, Jesus; for you are our “ righteousness, holiness, and redemption” (1Cor.1:30). You fulfilled the demands of the law for us (Rom. 10:14) and now you’re fulfilling the beauty of the law in us (Rom. 8:4). One Day we will be totally sinless and totally Christlike, because our Father will finish the work he began in us (Phil.1:6).    Because he hid our lives in yours, our Father cannot love us more than he does on this Tuesday, and he’ll never love us less (Col.3:1-5). In fact, whether we “crush it” or “blow it,” Abba loves us as much as he loves you. (John 17:23, Rom.8:15-16, Eph.1:5; Zeph.3:14-17).    Sealed, indwelt, and being transformed by the Holy Spirit (2Cor.1:22; Jn.7:37-39), we have nothing to fear. Worries, wars, and warheads all have termination dates (Whew!). Cancer, crises, and our inconsistencies are destined for eradication (Hallelujah!). We have peace with God because you are our peace, Jesus (Eph2:14). We have hope because you live in us as our hope of glory (Col.1:27).    Jesus, when we think about our inevitable death we think about greater “gain” (Phil.1:21) plus a big “Hallelujah!” For you robbed the grave of its victory, destroyed its “sting,” and expelled its fear (1Cor.15:55, 1Jn.4:18, Heb.2:14-15).  When we think about heaven, it’s not “streets of gold,” but you, Jesus—and that fills us with joy.
