Paraphrase of Ecclesiastes 4:9–12    Lord Jesus, I've been thinking lately about friendship, and especially friends woven together as a rope of grace. It's a gift to have friends who bring lifting power to our burdens, warmth in a world of coldness, and companionship in our every-season, highs-and-lows journey Home. Indeed, thank you for … Friends who laugh and play, and weep and lament with us. Friends who identify with our pain, struggles, and confusion. Friends who remind us of the Gospel, Jesus' love, and the Bigger Story. Friends who offer unrushed presence, hot tears, and comic relief. Friends who pray in the moment, because they know they'll forget later. Friends who remind us to wait upon you—and to wait a little longer. Friends who would rather be kind than right. Friends who trust us with their hearts and work for our joy.   Jesus, these cherished friendships turn our hearts to you. For you are the foundation and fountain of all good friendship. It's stunning, settling, and sweet to hear you say to us, "I no longer call you servants, I call you friends" (Jn15:15).    "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends" (Jn.15:13)—and that's exactly what you did for us. So many of us are facing difficult situations or walking with others who are—whether it's tragic death, abuse, miscarriage, relationship conflicts, parenting struggles, job loss, or being treated unfairly.    As Christians, we know our hope is certain. The story of the Bible is the restoration of all things. But we're not there yet, and we've got some work to do in learning how to help people process their pain and loss.    That's why, alongside some special guests, I'm leading a six-week cohort to equip ministry leaders, counselors, and friends to effectively walk along-side grieving people with tenderness and hope. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Jesus Is Our Home and He Will Take Us Home SCOTTY SMITH Jesus to us: " Abide in me—abide in my love" (Jn.15:4, 9).    Dear Jesus, a great song from a dear friend greeted me as I awoke today:    "Though you are homeless, though you're alone, I will be your home. Whatever's the matter, whatever's been done. I will be your home. In this fearful fallen place, I will be your home. When time reaches fullness, when I move My hand, I will bring you home … I will be your home." (Michael Card) Wet eyes and grateful heart—what a way to start this Thursday.    I've lived on Melville Street, Oakwood Lane, Rosewood Vally Drive, and Highgrove Circle—meaning I've lived in houses on those various streets. But more than ever I am so grateful to be able to say you are my Home, Jesus—my heart habitat, permanent address, domicile of delight, happy place, grace-sanctuary, and residence of rest. Hallelujah, and thank you.    A house has an address; a home has a heart. "Home is where the heart is"; much more so, our home is where your heart is, Jesus. Wherever you are, that's where we want to be. By the riches of the Gospel, our most permanent, glorious, welcoming, peaceful, safe, and joyful address is "in Christ."    However, sometimes good friends say to us out of concern: "Your lights are on, but nobody's home." Meaning, "I know you're present, but you seem 10,000 miles away—distant and disconnected. Jesus, when you have to say that to us, "bring us home"—by whatever means necessary. We know you will never leave for forsake us, but we're prone to wander. Bring us home, Jesus. Reignite our fellowship and intimacy with you.
