Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH This May Be My Favorite July 4th Ever SCOTTY SMITH    This is what the Lord Almighty has promised: “In those days ten people from all languages and nations will take firm hold of one Jew—the Messiah, Jesus himself. They will grab his robe and say, ‘Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you—in fact, you are Immanuel, God with us and for us—all of us.’” (New Testament fulfillment and paraphrase of Zechariah. 8:23)    Lord Jesus, I am so glad the World Cup is going on in America while our nation celebrates its birthday. There is so much international joy going on, so much every nation respect—the best of what sports can give us and a taste of the Day for which we long.    The Day when nobody will declare their independence, but all of us will declare our 100% dependence on you and our 100% delight in you. Indeed, you are the “one Jew” in Zechariah’s vision—the promised Messiah, the Lord who became the Lamb, our King who is now redeeming and gathering your every-nation bride.    “Ten people from all languages and nations” is shorthand—a glorious reminder of God’s promise to Abraham to birth and rebirth a forever family as numerous as stars, sand, and dust (Gen.12-17). Later you gave the Apostle John a vision on Gospel-steroids of these promises made to both Abraham and Zechariah:    “I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation  and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes…” (Rev. 7:9).  This is what history is all about, Jesus. It’s why you came into the world. It’s our great hope and deepest longing.    We “take hold of your robe” in the Gospel and are immediately robed in your perfect righteousness—our salvation and wedding garment. Hallelujah a gazillion times over. On this particular July 4th, we celebrate you as the Lord of the nations and the Saviour of the world! Hallelujah, and So   Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH God Doesn’t Need Us—He Passionately Desires and Delights in Us SCOTTY SMITH    “ God is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.” (Acts 17:25)    Heavenly Father, this is a glorious and freeing verse from your Word. I was taught as a child to be a nice boy because you are always watching. I was also taught that you needed my help in the world, so I should always be helpful to others. Though the adults in my life were well-intending, they really misrepresented you and the Gospel. To say you need my help is like saying… Paul McCartney needs my help with finishing a song Yo-Yo Ma needs me to re-string and tune his cello Ronaldo needs me to take a penalty kick for him Michael McDonald needs me to take his place with the Doobie Brothers Alain Ducasse needs me to fill in for him at a French gala Stephen Spielberg needs me to edit his new movie Warren Buffett needs my advice on a few investments    All of these things are laughable, right? But here’s the truth and it’s no laughing matter. In fact, it is humbling, hard to believe, and heart staggering. You don’t need our help, Father. You love, desire, and delight in us. We’re not a means to any end for you, but you have given us a chief end which is to “glorify you and enjoy you forever”—to know and love you with everything we have and are.    We do that the best not by being nice, but being needy, so needy that Jesus becomes our entire “righteous, holiness, and redemption”—our very life and reason for being (1Cor.1:30; Col.3:1-4).    Abba, what we do matters and work itself has profound meaning as an expression of your image in us, the life of Eden, and the Gospel. For we are your “workmanship and masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which you prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph.2:19). Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Unfiltered, Unfettered, Unrestrained Delight in Jesus SCOTTY SMITH    “ He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me—in fact, the Lord “greatly delights” in all of his people. (Ps.18:19, Zeph.3:17).   “ Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)    Dear Lord Jesus, we love you only because you first loved us. That is bottom line and core Gospel reality. But to delight in you—that is a special place of freedom and joy requiring the work of the Spirit and our glad surrender.    Delighting in you… what an image and invitation: Not a polite, restrained, respectful, offend-no-one relationship with you. Rather an unfiltered, unfettered, unrestrained relationship with you born out of your delight in us.    We love to delight—and it is to your glory that we experience and express delight. We delight in our grandchildren—even in our pets; in fly fishing and trout catching; in savory meals and beloved friends. We delight in Montana skies, Maine lobsters, Vermont Smallmouth, and Northwoods rhubarb pie, Blue Ridge apple smoothies, Florida Gulf seafood—to name a few.    But we long for our greatest delight to be in you—in you personally, Jesus, not just in what you give us. For you don’t just satisfy us; you enthrall us. For you are the entire banquet and orchestra, the magnificence and meaning, the summum bonum and whole enchilada of life. Your love doesn’t just warm our hearts; it is “ better than life” (Ps. 63:3). More than just giving us life— you are our life (Col.3:4).    The “place of safety to which you have led us” (Ps.18:19) is the Gospel and our permanent address is “in Christ.” Jesus, in union with you we have everything we need and more than we can imagine or hope. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Oh, Love That Will NOT Let Us Go SCOTTY SMITH     I’m a mess Lord, but I’m your mess  … ” I am always with you only because you hold me  by my right hand, you guide me  with your counsel, and afterward you will take me  into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:23-26).    Lord Jesus, thank you for the gift of Gospel-renewal—your commitment to meet us where we are, welcome us into your presence, and restore us to the joy of our salvation. And thank you for Asaph (author of Psalm 73) who chronicled his story of needing and receiving a fresh work of your Spirit.    Like Asaph we own our Gospel-amnesia and heart drift. We are grateful that as prone as we are to wander, you are 10,000 times more committed to finding us, embracing us, and lavishing fresh grace on us. Hallelujah, and thank you.    Until you return and glorify us, the most spiritually mature among us sing “Oh, to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be. Let Thy goodness like a fetter , bind my wandering heart to Thee.” This isn’t a picture of backsliding, but front-sliding back into vital communion and robust fellowship with you.    Grant it Lord—free each of us to declare afresh, “Jesus, you are heaven to us. Nothing compares to the excellency of knowing you, the wonder of being loved by you, and the riches of our “in-Christ-ness.” You are our treasure, our portion, and our inheritance, Jesus. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Trusting Jesus for More and More Freedom SCOTTY SMITH “ Set me from my prison, that I may praise your name! (Ps.142:7)    Jesus, great Lord and Liberator, when King David prayed for freedom from his prison, he wasn’t behind iron bars, he was hiding in a cave. He felt pursued, trapped, and alone. He also knew where to look for grace and help—and that was to you. I begin today doing the same.    You’ve already set me free from many imprisonments, Jesus: The fear of dying, for you robbed the grave of its victory. Hallelujah! The fear of final judgment, for you were condemned in my place upon the cross. The tyranny of false gospels, for it is your righteousness that has saved me. Anxiety about the future, because you are ruler of the kings of the earth and sovereign over every cricket, crisis, and crucible. Glory!    When I consider these liberties, why would I doubt your ability or willingness to set me free from other chains and captivities? Here are a few I’m aware of, Jesus. Free me from my vain regrets—haunting memories and lingering shame about things I’ve done or didn’t do.    Break the chains of my insecurities. I still feel ill-equipped and incompetent in important areas of life—mostly relational. Be big in my life, Jesus, that people may assume the proper size.    Free and heal me from the trauma of old wounds. I have been a victim of abuse, but that’s not my identity. Some things will only be fully healed at your second coming. Let me be okay with that, even as I trust you to use my story and pain for the benefit of others.    Free me to be more present, childlike, and laugh more, Jesus—to be 10 times more curious than critical of others.
