“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who doesn’t change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

Heavenly Father, I woke up today a grateful man, and I want to “stay stuck” in this mode for the foreseeable and unforeseeable future. Here are a few of your gifts for which I’m particularly grateful this morning.

I’m so grateful, as James described you, that you are our “changeless Father.” You are always 100% sovereign, irrepressibly loving, and faithful. I stay grateful and needful for the Gospel of your grace—because I lived too long by the non-gospel of my grit. We are becoming more Christlike, but we’ll never be more righteous because Jesus is our “righteousness, holiness, and redemption” (1Cor.1:30). Hallelujah and thank you. And I’m also grateful today for these things:

  • Grace-forged, time-tested, all-season friendships
  • A seven Largemouth Bass Day yesterday with grandson Otto
  • Knowing Jesus is currently ruling the world with truth and grace
  • Backyard hummingbirds and dark chocolate Klondike bars
  • Exciting reports of Gospel breakthroughs in the world
  • A home delivery service in Franklin for fresh sourdough bread
  • Knowing the throne of grace has never been more occupied
  • Seeing so much green everywhere in middle TN this late in July
  • The joy of knowing you as Redeemer—not Re-Do or 2nd Chance
  • Darlene’s joy water coloring with her high school friend PeggyLastly Abba, thank you for your commitment to bring to completion your good work in each of us and in every square inch of your universe. Thank you for the coming Day when the entire earth will be filled with your glory and all things will be new. Hope is the order of this day and every day. So Very Amen.

“Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you and carry you.” (Ps.55:22; Isa.46:4). “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. My yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matt.11:29).

Lord Jesus, like every day, today we are grateful you are ruling the world with your grace and truth. You abound in burden bearing love, rest-giving kindness, and peace-giving perspective. Whew and Hallelujah!

In my most recent airport adventure, I saw a guy carrying 4 backpacks running to catch a flight. I immediately thought, “Good luck trying to get on your plane with 4 backpacks!” Because I was already tired, I imagined myself as that “guy” and assigned meaning to each of the 4.

The first backpack represents past regrets and accumulated shame. The second backpack holds bruised and broken relationships and resentments. The third backpack contains vulnerability about the future and fears generated by negative “What if’s?” in life. The fourth backpack is different from the other three, because it’s shaped like your yoke—specifically designed to be “easy and light” and to carry me, and not me carry it.

I felt your Spirit’s witness, telling me I can choose only one of these four to carry for the rest of my life—and I must leave the other three behind. Well, that’s a no-brainer. Of course, I choose backpack four, Jesus. BUT I have to choose it every day and leave the other three “off the plane.”

So HELP me Jesus! Every time I’m tempted to reach for the other three, supernaturally, providentially, kindly, firmly “swat my hand.” You will “hold me fast” and you will carry me Home. Hallelujah, and So Very Amen.

Awake Or Asleep—Do These Things
SCOTTY SMITH

Jesus “died for us so that, whether we’re awake or ‘asleep,’ we may live together with him. Therefore encourage each other and build each other up.” (1Thess.5:11)

Lord Jesus, thank you for the gifts of an eternal perspective, a grateful heart, and a call to encourage. There’s a lot we don’t have control over—plenty going on that can be fear-fueling, hackle-raising, and hope-sapping. BUT in our most Gospel-sane moments we remember you are with us and for us, and our lives are fully hidden in yours.

You died for us that we may be with you right now and forever. You have us, desire us, delight in us. You determine the number of our days and follicles, work in all things for our good and are making all things new. Hallelujah, and thank you, Jesus. Honestly, what more do we really need? “All” we have on this Wednesday in July is …

  • New mercies, sufficient grace, and transcendent peace.
  • The gift of your righteousness and a 24/7 invitation into rest
  • A loving Father, the indwelling Spirit, and a returning Bridegroom
  • A forgiven past, Gospel-claimed present, and a glorious future. So, for the rest of July give us joy in encouraging those around us. Free us to obsess less and bless more. May we catch each other “doing it right,” speak words of thankfulness and kindness to one another, and see each other through the lens of Abba’s mercy and your gentleness.

Jesus, fill our hearts with your Spirit and fresh enjoyment of you. Keep us grateful for “little” things too—fish caught, conversations had, fresh gelato, sourdough bread, sunrises/sunsets, moments of hilarity, live music, rainbows, etc. Should this be the month we “fall asleep” in you, we are grateful to know we’ll wake up in your presence. So Very Amen.

Astonishing: Jesus Desires Us and Pursues Us
SCOTTY SMITH

My beloved speaks and says to me: “Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.” Song of Songs 2:10

Lord Jesus, that you speak to us with such endearing terms is hard to fathom. That you are constantly pursuing us for intimate fellowship is both the greatest complement you can pay us and a warning to us. How do we know when we’ve “leaked,” lost, or left a vital heart connection with you? For me the tell-tell signs include:

  • Emotional tiredness leads me to downward wandering thoughts
  • I get easily irritated and more judgmental of others
  • Busyness takes precedent over beholding your beauty
  • Fear seizes more of my heart-space than your peace does
  • My time in the Word becomes more duty than delight
  • I drift into living side-by-side rather than face-to-face with you
  • I go from singing “Jesus I am resting, resting” to sighing “Jesus I am vexing, vexing.”

Jesus, again we say—that you desire rich, intimate time with us is life-giving, heart-enthralling, and always timely. It’s hard to keep a Mary-like heart in a Martha-like world (Lk.10:38-42), or in a Habakkuk-like season of stress and confusion (Hab.3:16-19), or in a Naomi-like story of loss and sadness (Ruth 1), or in a Paul-like period of feeling overwhelmed and alone (2Cor.1:8-11), or in a David-like state of shame (Psalm 51).

We don’t offer these things as excuses, but as honest confession and earnest plea. Refresh, renew, replenish our hearts, Jesus. Before summer 2026 segues into “school year” madness—center, settle, and enthrall us with yourself, Jesus. By your Word and Spirit …  through good friends and your voice in creation … in stillness and aloneness … by salty tears and loud laughter —however you choose, free us to “come away” with you. Jesus, you are our “righteousness, holiness and redemption” (1Cor.1:30); again, be our deepest joy and greatest delight. So Very Amen.
