Why Do We Love Abba?

" Why does Job revere and love you? Haven't you put a hedge around him, his family, and possessions? … But if you make him suffer and take all that stuff away, he'll curse you to your face." (pp Job1:9–11)

Gracious Father, does the devil watch American religious TV shows? Because there's much there to substantiate his claim that you're a Sugar Daddy—buying the affection of your children. The so-called Prosperity Gospel isn't the Gospel—it's transactional, pragmatic, self-centered religion. It knows nothing about our spiritual bankruptcy and utter need for Jesus to be our perfect righteousness and primary treasure.
But as I think today about Job's story, Satan's charge remains current: Why do we love you, Father? What IS our motivation for worshiping you? How will we think about you the next time we suffer loss, betrayal, and pain? That, no doubt, will happen.
Abba, I want to love and worship you simply because you are God, and I am not. You created and saved me by your sovereign power and sheer grace. I'm not asking for more suffering and I'm not begrudging the many creature comforts you give me; but I am looking forward to the Day when I will sing with 100% integrity, freedom and joy:
"Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise; Thou mine inheritance, now and always. Thou and thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my treasure thou art." (Be Thou My Vision). Thank you for securing and guaranteeing that most glorious and eternal Day.
Abba, until then take the Gospel deeper and deeper into my heart so I can affirm with all your grace-bought, beloved children: "Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." (Ps.73:25-26). So   Very Amen.

To know Jesus' love more fully—"its breadth, length, height, depth" (Eph.3:18)
Jesus, for those who love college basketball, it's that time of year that everyone gets excited about: March Madness and all the games played towards the Final Four to determine the national champion from both men and women's basketball college teams.
Speaking of the number 4, you must love it too for you created 4 points on the compass—North, South, East, and West; and there are "4 living creatures" around your throne (Rev.4:8). You are the hero, meaning, and fulfillment of the 4 parts of the Old Testament (Law, History, Poetry, and Prophecy); and you commissioned 4 Gospel writers to perfectly chronicle your story—Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. But here are the Final Four's in your story I am most pumped, thrilled, and joyful about in Spring 2026.
On the glorious Day of your return, we will see you as you are and we will be made like you. It will be impossible for us to ever sin again, and only possible for us to love as you love us. Indeed, we will be filled and overflowing with the 4 dimensions of your love—its "breadth, length, height, and depth" Eph.3:14-19). Hallelujah, these 4 expressions of sin's damage will be gone forever—"death, mourning, crying, and pain" (Rev.21:4). Not just 4, but all our tears will be wiped away, and all the pain behind those tears will be redeemed. Hallelujah and thank you.
Your beloved Bride—redeemed from 4 categories of humanity—"every tribe, language, people, and nation" (Rev.7:9), will inhabit the 4 corners of the new heaven and new earth forever (Rev.21:1-22:5). Until you return to finish making all things new, may we live and love to your glory. Indeed, Gospel Sanity trumps March Madness 10,000 times over. So Very Amen!

Abba, Fish, Eggs, and More of the Spirit
SCOTTY SMITH
" What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more   will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:11–13)
Dear Abba, you are the Father from whom all "fatherhood" derives its meaning, encouragement, and hope. All blessings are traceable back to you. All good gifts come from you—including the gift of the Holy Spirit.
By your Spirit you gave us new life in Christ. You sealed us with the Spirit and he now permanently indwells us. 24/7/365 he never stops witnessing to our Sonship and belovedness. He is the firstfruits and guarantee of our citizenship in heaven and the glories of our coming life in the new heaven and new earth. Hallelujah and thank you!
By your Spirit you are making us more like Jesus. By your Spirit you are growing fruit to your glory and the blessing of our neighbors. By your Spirit you lead us, pray inside of us, convict us without shaming us, and show us more and more of Jesus everywhere in the Bible. And shockingly, Abba, these are just several of the many more ways your Spirit blesses us.
It's why we take the promise of more of your Spirit seriously and joyfully. As a fisherman, I am glad you give fish—especially trout, cobia, redfish, and salmon. As someone who loves a good breakfast, I am thankful for eggs. But with my sisters and brothers in Christ, I'm most grateful and ready for more of your Spirit's work in my life and in our midst as your children.
All stereotypes aside—"Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us." Abba, we need a sure and lasting revival. We need to be intoxicated with your Spirit all over again (Eph.5:18). We need the power of your Spirit to live and love to your glory. Come, Spirit, come. So Very Amen.
