Memorize, marinate, and meditate on things that are excellent and worthy of praise ” (Paraphrase of Phil.4:8). “ Your thoughts are like unbroken wild horses. Bring them all into the corral of Jesus’ truth, goodness, and beauty.”  (Paraphrase of 2Cor.10:5).    Lord Jesus, these Scriptures aren’t merely “nice verses”—they are life-giving, life-shaping, life-freeing realities. Pistachio gelato, chocolate creme brulee, and hand-churned peach ice cream are “nice”; taking responsibility for our thinking is necessary.    This isn’t mind over matter; it’s the Gospel transforming everything. It’s having you, Jesus, as our foundation and freedom, our preoccupation and treasure, the narration of our lives and the adoration of our hearts. The more we see of you, Jesus, the better we’ll look at everything else by you.    For every joy and delight we experience in life finds its meaning and source in you. And every heartache, fear, and trauma finds its resolution through you. You are that loving, powerful, and generous with us. Hallelujah, and thank you.    Jesus, may your peace rule in our hearts. May your joy be our strength. May your grace be our oxygen. May your kindness flow through us like a Montana mountain stream bringing refreshment to others. May your current enthronement and sure-and-glorious return sabotage our navel-gazing anxieties and Gospel-under-believing fears.    With palms up, eyes fixed, and hearts engaged—we begin this weekend with you, Jesus.  So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Ask Big. Trust 100%. Rest in the One Who Does All Things Well. SCOTTY SMITH    Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” Luke 18:27    Lord Jesus, thank you for another day to rest in your love, boast in your cross, and grow in your grace. Only you are worthy of our worship, love, and trust. It’s why we take your declaration in this verse seriously. There are no limits to what you can do—none, zilch, zip. But there is an eternity of wisdom, an ocean of grace, and a Trinity-sized supply of love that determines the difference between “can do” and “will do.”    Grant us grace to accept how you take our “impossibilities” and either replace them with a better providence, fulfill them in ways we can’t imagine, or choose to reserve some of your “ best work” till heaven. But in the personal category of “this-is-impossible-for-me-alone”—here’s what I ask you to do in me and through me, Jesus.     I want to pray without ceasing, forgive without resenting, and live without comparing.    I want a photographic memory of the Gospel, and a mercy-transformed memory of wrongs done against me.    I want to be non-defensive and humble when confronted; and quicker than ever to repent, repair, and rejoice in the wonders of your grace.    I want to listen to others, not just hear their words—listening with a curious heart, not a critical spirit.    I want to know you better than I ever have, Jesus, and enjoy deeper intimacy and fellowship with you.    I want your joy to be my strength, your Kingdom to be my first-sought reality, and your glorious return to shape how I think about the rest of my days till that Day.    Jesus, fill my heart with so much of your truth, goodness, and beauty I will come right up to the edge of doxological explosion! Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Grace for a Perspective and Attitude “Adjustment” SCOTTY SMITH   “ We can rejoice when we encounter problems and trials, for they help us develop endurance. Endurance develops strength of character and character strengthens our hope. The hope God gives us doesn’t lead either to shame or disappointment—for Abba dearly loves us. In fact, he gave us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” (pp Rom.5:3-5)     Heavenly Father, multiple challenges + waiting + weariness + heart-drift is an equation that often results in a bad attitude, wrong thinking, and poor choices. Thus, these words from the Apostle Paul come as a Spirit-kiss, mind-balm, and heart-salve.    Just when we start heading into a downward cycle of people-blaming, self-contempt, and/or heavenward-railing, you send your Word to heal us (Ps.107:20). Healing often comes by changing us—not our circumstances. Though we’d prefer a hassle-free, conflict-void life, you choose to give us patient endurance, Christlikeness, and a living hope instead.    Being a gazillion times wiser than us, you know what is best; and being a gazillion times more loving, you also know what we need. So, thank you for the gift and various ministries of the Holy Spirit. He is rocket fuel for our hope, strength in our weakness, and the only one who can actually make us like Jesus.    Abba, I pray today for friends today who are tired and weary, spent and exhausted, vulnerable and easy targets for the lies of the devil. By your Holy Spirit, grant each of us a fresh, copious outpouring of your love into our hearts. Instead of feeling abandoned, may we sense our adoption and belovedness in Christ. Turn our cries of “Why me, Lord?” into “Thank you, Abba.”  Transform our self-centered impatience into other-centered compassion. So Very Amen. Wish you had a roundup of our best content? Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Every Single Day—There’s a Battle for Our Heart’s Trust SCOTTY SMITH    Abba, “ you give perfect peace to all who trust you and keep their thoughts fixed on you” (pp Isa. 26:3). “ Some trust in chariots and some in horses.” (Others trust in money (1Tim.6:17), control (Prov.3:5-6), mere men (Jer.17:5), their idols (Isa.44:9-10) or princes/politicians (Ps.146:3).  “But we trust   in the name of the LORD our God” (Ps.20:7).    Heavenly Father, every day—including this one, we face a battle for our heart’s trust. To feel vulnerable is to be human, but to steward our vulnerability is to be wise. Our default mode is to vex over the immediacy of our hurts, fears, and disappointments. But our calling is to rest in the permanency of your sovereignty, faithfulness, and grace. Worrying without sleeping isn’t a helpful substitute for walking by faith and trusting without seeing (2Cor.5:7).    So, with arms raised, fists relaxed, and hands extended—we release to you the things and people over which we have zero control. We’ll probably have to do so several times today. Some of these things are so old they’ve gathered dust and rust. Some are as current as this very moment. Some haunt us from a future we can’t predict. Some are 90%+ imaginary—projections of the devil’s lies and our own fragile hearts.    Abba, you aren’t just the Alpha and the Omega; you also have gamma, zeta, theta, sigma, etc., covered too. “When the cares and anxieties of our hearts multiply, your consolations bring us joy” (Ps. 94:19), for you are our “Father of compassion and God of all comfort” (2Cor.1:30).    When we turn from you, ignore you, or under-trust you—we become rudder-less, sail-less, wind-less, oar-less boats adrift on the ocean of fear, hurt, and “What if’s?” But as this day begins and continues— we choose to trust you over trying to be our own savior—or anybody else’s. Abba, we choose trusting you over resenting others, medicating foolishly, fearing our way into a certifiable mess, or running to Gospel-less non-solutions. So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Living with Peace, Gratitude, and Intentionality All the Way Home SCOTTY SMITH  Let’s be like Abraham, who lived “looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God.” (Heb.11:10).   “In keeping with God’s promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth…” (2Pet.3:13)    Dear Jesus, I have no desire to know the exact day or means by which you will take me Home. But (Hallelujah!), because of the Gospel, I’m not afraid to die. You removed the sting of death, robbed the grave of its victory, and have already raised me to newness of life in yourself (Col.2:12). Thank you!    And having rescued me from my original sentimental, “Hallmark-ish,” unbiblical notions of heaven—I am really excited about our coming life in the new heaven and new earth. But until then, Jesus, how do you want me to invest the rest of my days? Should you give me one, ten, or twenty-five more years, how might the Gospel of your kingdom and the riches of your grace shape those years?    What do I need to make a bigger (and lesser) deal of? What things do I need to let go of till heaven brings resolution and healing? Who should I be spending more (and less) time with? I’ve just finished 50 years of being a church staff pastor; but I’m not done serving you, Jesus. So, how can I best serve you all the way Home?    The two things which define history are your commitment to redeem your every-nation people through the Gospel, and your commitment to make all things new. How do you want me to engage with  both of those stories with my Gospel-posse, friends, and other believers?    Through my weakness and “jar-of-clay-ness” (2Cor.4:7-9) release the aroma of grace and reveal your truth, goodness, and beauty to others.
