Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH All of Life Is to Be Lived Revering Jesus SCOTTY SMITH “Out of reverence for Christ…” (Eph. 5:21)    Lord Jesus, talk about being wrong—my first experience of the word “reverence” in association with you was closer to “rigor mortis” than a true revering of you. But true reverence is all about astonishment, amazement, and adoration—not being polite, quiet, and tippy-toeing around you. You call us to lift our hands in your presence (Ps.63:3-4), not fold them—to come to your throne of grace shamelessly and boldly (Heb.4:16), not with hesitation and fear.    The Gospel put an end to any uncertainly about what you think of us. You love us as much as our heavenly Father loves you. Hallelujah! Indeed, you occupy a throne of grace, not a throne of judgment.    So Jesus, free us to worship and cherish you. Your perfect love drives out all fear, and your Spirit pours in great love. Fear has to do with judgment and punishment—and, hallelujah, you exhausted both for us on the cross. Keep turning our dread into delight, and our unbelief into uninhibited love for you and others.    Free us to enjoy you, Jesus. Our chief end in life is to “glorify and enjoy you forever.”  So no matter how spiritually disciplined we are and careful we are to avoid sin, if we’re not enjoying you, we’re not really honoring you the way you intend. You pray for our joy; show us the ways we resist this prayer.    Like the Apostle Paul, we want to know you better and better (Phil.3:10)—not fall into heartless familiarity or the chilling of our affection for you. There is so much more of your truth, goodness, and beauty for us to know and experience. Keep us grateful, thirsty, hungry, and expectant. Thank you Jesus, and So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH God’s Laugh Rebukes My Irritation SCOTTY SMITH    “God enthroned in heaven laughs…” (Ps.2:4) “In a little while the wicked and wickedness will be gone. Though you look for them, you won’t find them. Instead the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity… The Lord laughs at the wicked for he knows their day is coming.” (pp Ps.37:10–13)    Heavenly Father, I love to hear Darlene (my wife) and her best friend, Peggy, laugh while they watercolor. I love a toddler’s giggle, and I love to experience guffaws and horse-laughter with friends. But this week I needed, once again, to hear your laugher in the Scriptures—a laughter that fills the courts of heaven and the chambers of eternity. There’s no consternation or vexation in heaven—just peace and joy over the unfolding of your perfect plan written with the ink of your grace with your most steady hand.    Please make your joy, merriment, and triumph over evil more “hearable” and real to us than ever. We are grateful for your promise that in “a little while” all wickedness will be gone forever—no matter its ideological, political, or diabolical origin. We’re not looking for revenge over others. We’re not relishing seeing particular groups perish. But we ARE looking for Jesus to return and put all things right and make all things new. Hallelujah on Gospel steroids!    Thank you that Jesus has already defeated the devil (Col.2:15) and has set an expiration date on all evil and everything that contradicts your truth, goodness, and beauty. And right now demons increasingly tremble (James 2:19), and you laugh louder and louder. Indeed, our world—your world, Father, is more pregnant with glory than it is filled with evil. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Let’s Be Careful Where We Hitch Our Trust-Wagon SCOTTY SMITH “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” Psalm 20:7    Lord Jesus, the battle for our heart’s trust is daily, tenacious, and vicious. We trust whatever we believe will protect, fulfill, and give our lives meaning. On this August Tuesday, we affirm that only you are worthy of our worship, love, and trust. But we also want to name your competition. In David’s day, it was chariots and horses; in our day many pseudo-saviors and heart-idols claim our trust. The list is endless.    Some trust in their spiritual disciplines, good works, and pious ways. But we trust in your finished work and the full forgiveness and perfect righteousness you have given us. Hallelujah!    Some trust in a spouse’s affection, a lover’s interest, and/or their children’s attachment. But we trust in your steadfast love and the great delight you have in us, Jesus.    Some trust in stock portfolios, real estate, crypto, and gold. But we trust in the immeasurable riches of your grace and our inviolate inheritance awaiting us in heaven.    Some trust in physical attractiveness, taut skin, great health, active libido, and held Yoga positions. But in sickness and in health, in youthfulness and in aging, with toned muscles and love handles—we trust in you Jesus, the truly beautiful One.    Some trust in being included in special groups, circles, and clubs. But we trust in our “in-Christ-ness,” the unbreakable union we have with you, and the rich fellowship we enjoy with the entire Trinity.    Some trust in politics, power, and trashing and thrashing “them”—whoever “them” happens to be. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH When Getting Old Is Getting Old SCOTTY SMITH “Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you. (Deut.31:8)   Father, thank you for the promise of your perpetual presence and not stop care. When I’m afraid to be alone, you won’t let me be. When I want to be alone, you won’t let me be. When it feels like I am all alone, I’m really not. When I need you to come through for me, you do and you always will—maybe not as I’d prefer and maybe not on my schedule, but always on the timetable of grace. You have never failed your children. When I’m discouraged, you don’t ignore, despise or revile me. You enter, engage, and encourage me at the GPS of my struggle and hard thing. When I am feeling vulnerable, you don’t say “Buck up, be strong.” You say, “I understand and I am here.” When getting old is getting old, you don’t tell me about 100-year-old children of yours who never whine. You are kind with me. You don’t say stuff like, “You’re still useful.” You say, “You’re more beloved than you realize.” When deep regrets resurface and haunt me, you don’t remind me of lessons you tried to teach me; you remind me of the Gospel. When my memory isn’t as sharp, my energy isn’t as high, my sleep isn’t as long, my balance isn’t as sure, you don’t say—“That’s okay, you’ve had a good run. Step aside and let others pass.” Rather you  say, “I will be your God throughout your lifetime— until your hair is grey, then white with age. I made you, and I will care for you.
