Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Jesus Call Us to “Be a Sunbeam”—Just Honest and Good Friends SCOTTY SMITH   “Conflicts on the outside and fears on the inside—we needed encouragement, and our Father gave it when Titus showed up. He is a conduit of grace, and his very presence is a joy”.  (Paraphrase of 2Cor.7:5-7).    Lord Jesus, I’ve been bumping into my “humanity” lately, so Paul’s vulnerability is both freeing and refreshing. If my favorite Apostle felt frazzled and frayed at times, why wouldn’t we? Hallelujah, the Gospel puts an end to posing and pretending.    Sufficient grace comes in many forms, but more often than not it comes wrapped in human flesh. You’re quite capable of sending ravens and rainbows, manna and miracles, a fish with a coin in its mouth (Matt17:24-27) or 153 net-ripping fish to discouraged disciples (Jn.21:4-12). But most often you come to us through our friends.    I love how Paul referred to Titus as a conduit of grace whose  “ presence is a joy .” Titus didn’t put pressure on Paul to be happy, get over it, or be spiritual. He isn’t the kind of friend who comes into the room, and we feel the need to sit up, buck up, or fake it. In Winnie-the-Pooh-speak, when we’re feeling “ Eeyore-ish” we don’t need Tigger’s showing up—whose “tops are made out of rubber and bottoms made out of springs.”    Jesus, thank you for our Titus-like friends—please make us the same. They bring us your non-anxious, judgment-empty, kindness-filled presence. When you are near, “bruised reeds and smoldering wicks” feel zero pressure “be a sunbeam” for you (Matt.12:15-21). Thank you for being gentle and lowly, not irritated and put off. Thank you for being a friend of sinners, familiar with grief, always emitting the aroma of grace. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH What Is a Jesus-Centered Prayer Life? SCOTTY SMITH “ The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16       Lord Jesus, I used to read this verse and cringe. First because I thought answers to my prayers were directly tied to my maturity as a Christian. The more “righteous” I was, the more my prayers would “work.” (What an impossible burden to carry!) Second, I used to think an answered prayer was one to which you say “Yes!” (What a self-centered view of prayer that is!)    Thankfully, the Gospel has been deconstructing and rebuilding my prayer life, with you and your glory as the focus, meaning, and goal of all prayer. Jesus, first and foremost, you are the “righteous man” whose prayers are powerful and effective. Jesus, you are our great prayer warrior—ever living to advocate and intercede for us (Heb.7:25, John 17). Hallelujah… everything you pray for will come to pass!    The “only” righteousness we claim is yours. When you saved us, you robed us in your righteousness, and Abba declared us 100% righteous in you. Because our lives are now hidden in yours and because of our unbreakable union with you, we’ve been set free to pray with palms-up-boldness at the throne of grace.    For you are the sovereign King who is reigning over all things; not a computer waiting to be programmed by us. You are our great Bridegroom who enjoys communing and fellowshipping with us in prayer—which is the most life-changing form of prayer there is this side of heaven. The better we know you, Jesus, the more we will understand good answers to our prayers include “Yes,” “No, and you’ll thank me later,” “Not yet,” “Yes, but not as you asked,” “Yes, but you’ll only see it in heaven.”    One thing is certain, throughout eternity our bold, bodacious, beautiful declaration will be, “Our God has done all things well.” We praise, bless, and adore you, Jesus. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH 7 Glorious “No More’s and Never Again’s” SCOTTY SMITH   “ I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea… and no more death, mourning, crying or pain” (Rev. 21:1-4).   “ Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst… For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water” (Rev.7:16-17).    Lord Jesus, we adore you for many well-founded grace-saturated reasons. But rather than just offering a generic “thank you” we want to be specific. Though there are scores more, here are “ 7 no more’s and never again’s” we’ll enjoy in fullness at your return.    No more “ sea“: Jesus, you haven’t secured a “beach-less” eternity for us but a “broken-less” one—an evil void, sin eradicated, all-things-new” forever. Glory! In the Book of Revelation, the “sea” represents everything that contradicts your truth, goodness, and beauty—and all that stuff will be gone. The new heaven and new earth will have beaches, indeed. Hallelujah!    No more  “death, mourning, crying, pain”: Jesus, you defeated death and pain at your first coming and will eliminate them at your return. Thank you! We will never again experience death or pain in any form—no more physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, societal, relational, environmental death or pain.    No more “ hunger and thirst” of any variety: Jesus, thank you for setting an expiration date on hunger and thirst—physical, spiritual, and relational. All knowing and loving you in part will be over (Hallelujah!)—along with all poverty and privation, loneliness and disconnect. Our endless thirst for intimacy and ravaging hunger for wonderful relationships will be over-satisfied.    Jesus, you shepherd us now, and you will shepherd us then. Hallelujah what a Savior you are! Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH God’s Big, Loud, Sovereign, Redemptive Laugh SCOTTY SMITH  “ Very soon the wicked and wickedness won’t be around; they will not be found. The meek, not the haughty, will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity. Evil hates beauty, wicked people plot against God’s truth, goodness, and his people—gnashing their teeth with glee. But God laughs  the loudest now and will get the last laugh. For having defeated evil at the cross, he has set the Day of evil’s eradication.” (Paraphrase of Ps.37:10–13)    Heavenly Father, laughter isn’t one of the things I grew up associating with you. Blinding white light, being way above me, sitting on a giant throne surrounded by angels and pipe organ music, yes—but not laughter. May the Gospel continue to deconstruct all the wrong ways I’ve thought about you. Keep reminding me that I’ve probably tasted only about .003 % of your love, awesomeness, and goodness.    I so look forward to the day when we will actually hear you laugh, Abba—a laughter and joy that already fill the corridors of heaven. That will be the Day when the expiration date for all evil, wickedness, and injustice will arrive on the calendar of grace. Hallelujah! Hasten the Day.    Until then, please allow me and my friends to hear your laughter in the Gospel—or at least let us be certain of your absolute sovereignty, current reign, and irrepressible plan for the entire cosmos. You aren’t anxious, Abba; that would be us. May your joy be our strength, your promise be our confidence, and your timing be our schedule.    And may all of this “good stuff” translate into us living more on mission and less in fear. Give us eyes to see and hearts to believe that Jesus is making all things new, right now and right here. And give us joy, love, and grace-gumption to join him. So Very Amen.
