Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Dealing with Our Heart and Eye Gunk SCOTTY SMITH   “ If you live with a critical, judgmental spirit—don’t be shocked when you get the same in return. You obsess over a friend’s sawdust-sized sin or failure, while you ignore the ruff-hewn plank of poor-loving in your own eye… You hypocrite. If you really want to care for someone, own and deal with your own stuff first. That will make you a good friend and healer, not a gossip and perpetrator.” (Paraphrase of Matt.7:1–5)    Lord Jesus, when I rubbed my eyes this morning—it wasn’t eye-gunk; it was heart gunk that was all crusty and irritating. I went to bed last night as chief prosecuting attorney, the court reporter, whole jury, and executioner. Just because I don’t throw things or scream doesn’t mean I’m not a critical person. Condescending smugness, silent heart-assassin, and “photographic how-you-hurt-me memory” are all synonyms for clanging cymbals (1 Cor. 13:1).    My self-righteousness doesn’t show up in trying to merit more of your love—which is impossible; but when I withhold your love from others—which is ugly. Have mercy on me, Lord. How do I withhold your love, Jesus? In many ways, but quite often when I don’t choose to deal with other people’s “eye speck” as redemptively as possible. Forgive me, Lord.    Jesus, as chief cardiologist and head of the department of ophthalmology, bring your grace and truth to bear in my heart and my eyes. I want to love others as you love me, see them as you see them, and deal with breaches and brokenness in relationships “in line with the truth of the Gospel” (Gal2:14). Relationships will continue to be complex and messy all the way Home; but they don’t have to amass more undealt with heart-and-eye-gunk. Help us all, Jesus. Help and free me. So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Not “Name It and Claim It” but Believe It and Receive It SCOTTY SMITH    “God gave us his very great and precious promises so that through them we may share in his divine nature—(become like Jesus) and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” (2Pet.1:4)    Heavenly Father, this is a heart-centering, theology-correcting, Jesus-focusing verse. Three things stand out to me.    First: Thank you for giving us your “ great and precious promises.” Your promises represent things you planned in eternity, keep without exception, and implement with Swiss-timing. Indeed, your promises aren’t blank checks we fill in and cash for ourselves. They are the perfection of your plan executed in the fullness of time by the riches of your grace all for your glory. In this glorious sense, your promises claim us; we don’t claim them. Hallelujah, this affirmation is SO freeing.   Second: Thank you for clarifying why you gave us so many promises in the Bible. By your promises you transform us; we don’t program you. To “share in your divine nature” isn’t to become little creators and sovereigns over people and situations. It’s to become like Jesus. We are made in Jesus’ image and one Day will be fully like him (1Jn.3:1-3)—only because you will finish your work in us (Phil.1:6). Hallelujah! Until that Day, your promises help us “escape corruption”; not accumulate possessions.    Third: Your promises direct our gaze away from ourselves to Jesus. For Jesus is the emphatic “ Yes!” to every promise you ever made (2 Cor.1:20). He is the point, basis, guarantee, and goal of all your promises. This means we will never over-love Jesus, over-do astonishment of him, or reach over-preoccupation with Jesus. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH A Life Well Lived Because of a Savior Deeply Loved SCOTTY SMITH    “ I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Gal.2:20)    Heavenly Father, it’s the morning after we planted the body of your beloved daughter, Rose Marie Miller, in the soil of the earth. For 51 of her 101 years, you gave me partnership with her in the Gospel—which then became “mom-ship” in life. I needed both, treasure both, and I will miss both.    We never attend a funeral looking for takeaways—but you gave me many gifts during Rose Marie’s funeral yesterday. Thank you. A very simple casket carrying her fragile jar of clay, bore witness to the double treasure of a life well lived and a Gospel truly believed. Rose Marie died before she died. Crucified with Christ and raised to newness of life in Jesus, she never stopped marveling at being able to say, “I live by faith in the Son of God loved me and gave himself for me .”  Her life of self-denial was a life of Jesus-adoration.    In her last years, Rose Marie could carry very little baggage—being physically weak and unstable as she walked. But in the days when she could still carry her own suitcase, she carried less and less other “ baggage”: The big trunk of feeling responsible for the happiness and holiness of others. The roller bags of people’s approval, old regrets, and unconfessed sin. The backpacks of spending too much time, money, and worry on self. Rose Marie accumulated less and gave away more.    Her “secret” was no secret. Rose Marie loved the Gospel, she loved to repent, she loved to share Jesus, and she loved prayer—giving it and receiving it. Because she prayed more—the Gospel went deeper in her heart, she repented quicker, and she loved better. Hallelujah, and thank you Rose Marie. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Abba Never Has to Say, “Lord Willing.” SCOTTY SMITH “And this is the plan: At the right time, he (God) will unite everything under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth.” (Eph.1:10)      Heavenly Father, unlike us, you don’t have to make plans and then say, “Lord willing.” For you are the Lord who only plans things that you will make happen. Hallelujah… you do whatever you please and it has pleased you to: (1) Give us to Jesus (Jn.18:9) and give Jesus as our “righteousness, holiness, and redemption” (1Cor.1:30). We cannot be more saved. (2) Create the universe through Jesus and make him the heir of all things (Heb.1:2). We cannot over-revere or over-love Jesus. (3) Promise and deliver the Day when Jesus will finish making all things new, uniting “everything in heaven and on earth” in himself. We cannot have more peace or a greater hope.   What a blessed Day that will be… Wiped tears, redeemed pain, and healed everything No more worries, fears, regrets, wars, hurting, or hurting others The Great Commission will forever be the Great Accomplishment The earth will be filled with your glory, your redeemed family, and all things new No more death and dying. No more funeral homes and funerals. No more “Goodbye dear friend, see you in heaven”—which many of us will say today to Rose Marie Miller at her funeral—beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother (to over 65!) and spiritual mom to scores of us. What a Gospel and what a daughter of yours we will celebrate today, Abba.    Abba, hasten that most awesome and longed-for Day. Until then renew and deepen our love for Jesus. Free us to be joyfully spent for Jesus and spend less time obsessing about ourselves. Help us grow in gentleness, humility, and kindness. What a beloved, cared-for, hope-secured people we are.
