Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH In Praise of the God Who Knows Our Hearts SCOTTY SMITH "Lord, you know everyone's heart." Acts 1:24    Heavenly Father, there are so many areas of life that are clearly "above our pay grade"—and are only your domain. Heart-knowing is one of them. We often speak of being drawn to someone's heart, being shut out from a friend's heart, or having a burden for a loved one's heart… but only you really know what's in each of our hearts. That's why we pray with humility and joy, "Search me, O God, and know my heart" (Ps. 139:23), for we cannot and must not trust our own diagnosis—for ourselves or others.    Father, here's our great peace, sure hope, and worship fuel: Through Jesus, you've already sprinkled clean water on our hearts and have declared us to be clean. You have cleansed us from our impurities and are freeing us from our idols. You have given us a new heart and placed your Spirit within us. You removed our stony hearts and gave us hearts of flesh—hearts that beat for you and your glory (Ezek.36:24–27). What a generous and powerful God you are.    And you will complete this good work you've begun in each of us and in all of creation (Phil.1:6). We justified sinners are destined to be your glorified children (Rom.8:30)—as lovely and loving as Jesus. Hallelujah! We don't have to suffer the "paralysis of analysis" or the arrogance of judgmentalism—towards ourselves or others.    Until the Day our new heart becomes a perfected heart, show us practical ways of guarding and nourishing our hearts, and holding and caring for the hearts of others. Help us to walk in greater humility before you and in loving kindness with each other. Everybody has struggles we know little or nothing about. So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Grace IS Grace and There's Plenty of It SCOTTY SMITH    " Lord, I'm the only one left to honor you, and they're seeking my life too." God's reply,  "Eljah, I've kept 7000 men for myself who haven't bowed the knee to Baal." So too at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace." (pp Rom.11:3–6)    Holy Father, keep reminding me of the same glorious truths you spoke to Elijah. It was your grace that got me into your story and will keep me there, and it's your grace that is shaping the entire history of the cosmos and the salvation of your impossible to count "remnant." You are that generous and that mighty to save.     What a great, grace phrase: "I have reserved for myself"—that's how you think of us—your beloved children. You've made reservations for us, secured salvation of us, and guarantee preservation of us all the way Home. So just how big is your "remnant"? Many of them have Israeli passports, many have Iranian, Iraqi, Palestinian, Russian, and Ukrainian "papers." But with Gospel-eyes, John saw your forever family like this:    "A great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb." (Rev.7:9). Hallelujah and thank you. This is the meaning, heartbeat, and major storyline of all history. Father, heal our spiritual shortsightedness and astigmatism. Free us from under-believing the Gospel and semi-trusting you with the future of the world—or even the next 72 hours.    We want to live with bowed knees and palms up all the way Home. Renew our passion for every-nation mission, church planting and church renewal, and personal evangelism. You give "grace upon grace" to us in the Gospel (Jn.1:16), and "grace will be grace" until your glory and "remnant" fill the new heaven and new earth. Hallelujah, and So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Corn Beef and Cabbage and the Mercy and Grace of Abba SCOTTY SMITH   "By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me" (1Cor.15:10).   Dear Lord Jesus, on this "St Patrick's Day," one thing is for sure—Patrick of Ireland did not trust in the "luck of the Irish," but in the mercy and grace of Abba, our Father. I probably won't eat any corn beef and cabbage today, but I do want to feast on the riches of the Gospel the way Patrick did and be as filled with gratitude as our brother was. In his own words: "I know for certain, that before I was humbled I was like a stone lying in deep mire, and he that is mighty came and in his mercy raised me up and, indeed, lifted me high up and placed me on top of the wall. And from there I ought to shout out in gratitude to the Lord for his great favors in this world and forever—favors that the mind of man cannot measure." Patrick of Ireland Jesus, may we increasingly sense your every-circumstance presence like Patrick did; and grant us his vision and passion for vast multitudes to rest in your grace and love: "Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me." Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Daily Mercies and Fresh Grace for ISS and Other Attitudes SCOTTY SMITH    "Fools show their annoyance at once" (Prov.12:16 .) " Don't be quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools" (Eccl.7:9).  "Love isn't irritable or resentful . " (1Cor.13:4-5).    Heavenly Father, Paul's couplet about love not being "irritable or resentful" grabbed my attention today, for I woke up on the wrong side the "peaceful, easy, feeling" bed this morning. I could blame it on many things—the war in Iran, my basketball team's (UNC) struggles this year and Duke's no-struggle year, the killer frost in route just before St Patty's Day here in Franklin. I'll stop there.   Thank you for your ready welcome, compassionate heart, sense of humor, and daily mercies. Blame and shame make lame excuses for my ISS—irritable spirit syndrome. So, I'll cancel my plans for a pity party and relinquish my elder-brother attitude of a fool's annoyance. Father, by your grace, settle me, center me, and gentle me for the day.    I am grateful for your steadfast love, inexhaustible patience, and perpetual kindness. I want to walk in your Spirit today much more than I want to leak irritation and resentment around people I love. This war pushes many of my buttons right now; but Jesus is Lord—not my buttons. College basketball is really awesome but really non-eternal. My daffodils have already survived our recent  ice-storm, so what's a mere 22-degree March 15th evening?    To be human is to know a wide range of emotions—including aggravation, annoyance, provocation, and vexation. But to be yours is to repent quicker when vines we didn't plant wither (Jonah 4:1-11), return to Gospel-sanity and Gospel-kindness at the speed of grace, and especially it's to re-set our gaze and hearts on Jesus.
