Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Why Do We Call the Day Jesus Died "Good" Friday? SCOTTY SMITH  "We keep our eyes fixed on Jesus—for he is the founder and perfecter of our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, Jesus endured the cross, both disregarding and scorning its shame. He now sits enthroned at God's right hand." Hebrews 12:2    Lord Jesus, that you had to die for us isn't at all "good." But that you were glad to do so is "goodness" without parallel, generosity beyond measure, and love above all loves. No one could take your life from you—not an angry mob, legion of demons, or conspiracy of men. You freely gave your life for us—not as a brave martyr to be admired, but as God's Lamb to be adored.    Everything you endured, you endured for God's glory and for our salvation. You disregarded the shame of the cross because you regarded us above yourself (Phil.2:1-11). You took the judgment we deserve and gave us the righteousness we can never earn. This is the Gospel—make it more real, sweet, and transforming to us than ever. By the cross you crushed the devil once and for all (1Jn.3:8); and by the cross you have saved us fully and forever (Heb.7:25). Hallelujah, so many times over.    What joy awaited you on the other side of the cross? Most definitely the joy of reuniting with your Father (John 17:5); and on the perfectly timed Day, the joy of ushering in the new heaven and new earth (Rev.21:1-22:6). But wonder of wonders—the joy of having us as your beloved Bride was compelling and empowering to you. (Rev.19:6-9). We believe this stunning affirmation because it's in your Word; please make it more astonishing in our hearts. We love you, Lord Jesus, and ask you to intensify our love 10-fold this very year. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Jesus to Us: "Who Do You REALLY Believe I Am?" SCOTTY SMITH   "Surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question: "What do you think about the Messiah? Matt. 22:41-42    Lord Jesus, there's no greater privilege than knowing you and being loved by you. Throughout eternity, we will be exploring, experiencing, and savoring the "much-more-ness" of your glory and grace. That's why the question you asked the Pharisees two days before you died on the cross remains the primary question in life.    So, who do we think you are, Jesus? You are everlasting God and we are mere people. We'd despair if you were less, and we're weary of trying to be more. You are Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer, and Restorer. You are Alpha and Omega—the Beginning, Middle, and End of all things and all history. Angels worship you and stars sing to you. You generously feed the birds and clothe the fields with beauty. You are the emphatic "Yes!" to every promise God has made (2Cor.1:20).    Jesus, we are especially grateful you lived a life of perfect obedience for us and died a judgment-exhausting death in our place. By you we are completely forgiven, and in you we are perfectly righteous—for you are our "righteousness, holiness, and redemption" (1Cor1:30). You are our impassioned Bridegroom, and we are your beloved Bride. You cannot love us more, and you will never love us less.    You are our reigning and returning King—sovereign over days and demons, our joys and sufferings— every king, crisis, and crawdad. Broken reeds love your appearance and demons tremble in your presence. Lord Jesus, you are all this and SO much more.    Jesus, you know us perfectly and delight in us fully. There's not a moment you're not praying for us, singing over us, working in all things for our good and making all things  new. We are stunned, humbled, and grateful. Hallelujah, and thank you. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Where Do We Go for Eternal and Daily Peace? SCOTTY SMITH   "Jesus' wept over Jerusalem as he approached the city, and said, 'If you had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.'"  (Lk.19:41-42)    Lord Jesus, long before the Day you will wipe away our tears, you wept many of your own. You wept at Lazarus' tomb—despising death and its ravaging effects. And you grieve the ways we look for peace anywhere but in you—both as non-believers and believers.    The tears you shed coming into a religious-but-graceless Jerusalem underscore the depth of our need and the zenith of your mercies. Just a few days earlier, you told your disciples, "Don't let your hearts sink and settle into trouble and fear, for I give you peace— my peace." (pp Jn.14:27). Thank you for still speaking that word to us.    The only reason we have peace with God is because you weren't just walking into Jerusalem that day. You were walking to the cross to die the death we deserve to give us the salvation we desperately need. Jesus, if you hadn't died for us we'd still be hapless and hopeless, foolish and peaceless.    But many of us have more peace about dying that we have peace as we live. We don't just need peace with God; we also need "the peace of God to rule in our hearts" (Col.3:15). That might be what Easter 2026 is about for most of us. We live in a fear-fueling, peace-sabotaging world right now.    As those who belong to you—free us from the illusion that peace can be found in the absence of war and the rebound of our economy, in a king other than you or in a romance torrid with passion, in a cancer-free body or a happiness-filled life. Why settle for temporal happiness when we can have your eternal and daily peace? Once again, grant us the gift of restlessness until we rest in you alone, Jesus. So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Was Jesus' Cross a Tragic Accident Or Glorius Providence? SCOTTY SMITH  " My soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray 'Father, save me from this hour? No! This is the very reason I came. Father, bring glory to your name." (Jn.12:27-28)    Lord Jesus, as the events of "Holy Week" began to unfold, exuberant "Hosannas!" in Jerusalem gave way to deep troubling in your soul. There was no hesitation but profound consternation. No surprises awaited you, just an overwhelming assignment—a plan you embraced before the world began (Eph.1:3-14). Within days, you would take the judgment we deserve to give us the grace we could never earn. Your "bruised heel" (Gen.3:15) would crush Satan's snarly head. "Death would start working backwards"—the expiration date on all evil, illness, and brokenness would be set.    By your cross you paid the price of salvation for God's immense covenant family—children of grace from every nation, tribe, people, and language; daughters and sons of mercy as numerous as the stars in the sky, sand on the beaches, and dust of the earth (Gen. 12-17). Hallelujah—this is how big the reach and riches of the Gospel actually are.    Your cross wasn't a tragic accident but the most glorious providence. You took our sin to give us your righteousness (2Cor.5:21). Indeed Jesus, you didn't come to be our model to follow but our substitute to trust. So on the Monday before "Good Friday," of course your heart was greatly overwhelmed as you "surveyed" the meaning and cost of your cross before you were nailed to it.    Jesus, there is no greater love than the love you have given us through dying for us. There is no greater joy than the joy that compelled you to endure the cross on our behalf (Heb.12:2). Grant us grace this week to be undone, humbled, and profoundly gladdened as we survey the wonders of your cross afresh. So Very Amen. Wish you had a roundup of our best content?
