Seeing Jesus More Clearly to See Everything
SCOTTY SMITH

What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said,Rabbi, I want to see.” Mark 10:51

Dear Jesus, you know our need before we ask. You’ve never offered a wrong diagnosis, and you’ve never been confused about the proper remedy. The Gospel is the eternal exhibit A of this. We were dead in our sin, and you raised us to newness of life. We had no righteousness, and you gave us yours. Thank you, and Hallelujah!

So, what do we want you to do for us now, Jesus? Like this blind man, we too want to see. We are afflicted with various forms of spiritual blindness, myopia, astigmatism, and heart-eye disease. First and foremost, we want to see you as you truly are. The better we see you the more we’ll see everything else as you intend. Jesus, show us your truth, goodness, and beauty with 20-15 clarity and knee-buckling wonder.

Then we’ll see ourselves as belonging to you, hidden in you, delighted in by you, and being kept for you. Jesus, free us from our Gospel-blindness, our shame-cataracts, and every diseased and distorted way we see ourselves.

We’ll see others not primarily as a threat or a means to a personal end, but as your image-bearers—whether they know your or not. We’ll see time as a gift to be stewarded and money as the currency of grace. We’ll see kindness as more beautiful than rightness, and humility as the conduit of your love.

We’ll see suffering as a normal part of life for we who live between your resurrection and return—normal, but with a secured expiration date. We’ll see history as your storyboard of redemption, and all of creation as a groaning, pregnant woman, eagerly anticipating the Day she gives birth to the new heaven and new earth (Rom.8:19-22). Jesus, we want to see, starting with you. So Very Amen.

Infinitely More

Infinitely More
SCOTTY SMITH

“All glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or imagine”  (Eph. 3:20)

Heavenly Father, thank you for your non-stop commitment to work in all things for our good (Rom.8:28), and make everything work out according to your plan (Eph.1:11). May the words of this old hymn be first on our heart’s playlist until Jesus returns:

“This is my Father’s world: O let me ne’er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet.” That’s exactly who you are, Father—Ruler, Over-Ruler, and Redeemer. But, wonder of wonders, you are also “Chief-Rejoicer”—for you tell us you “rejoice in doing good for us,” and “wholeheartedly” fulfill every promise you have made  in Jesus (Jer.32:41; 2Cor.1:20).

Sometimes “doing infinitely more than we can ask or imagine” looks like you bringing resurrection life into the deadness of our hearts and dead places in our stories. We wain and wander in our love for you; but you always love us as much as you love Jesus—to the same degree and with the same delight. Why do we doubt you? Free us from our unbelief.

Sometimes “infinitely more” takes the form of the gift of “sufficient grace” in the middle of circumstances that may not change till heaven. A family fishing trip that yields great fish but even greater heart connections. A prodigal child/parent/sibling/friend coming home through the back door. Or any of a number of heaven-timed blessings, much need reversals, and Spirit-produced outcomes. Thank you, Abba.

Until the Day of “all things new,” renew our love for you, strengthen our trust in you, and super-size our kindness towards those around us. Everybody equally needs your grace. So Very Amen.

When It Comes to Jesus, All Hyperbole Is Gone
SCOTTY SMITH

I said to the Lord, “You are my Master! Every good thing I have comes from you.” The godly people in the land are my true heroes! … Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing.” Psalm 16:2-5

Lord Jesus, in keeping with David’s explosive blast of thanksgiving, we say “Yea, verily, and hallelujah!” When it comes to your glory and grace, hyperbole and exaggeration do not exist. For you are our Master and Redeemer, Creator and Re-Creator, Bridegroom and Inheritance.

Jesus, you are the fountain of lasting pleasures, the wellspring of eternal joy, the headspring from which all blessings flow. You love lavishly and redeem completely. In this very end-of-May moment, you joyfully at work making all things new, beautiful, and un-sad.

Compared to you, all other riches are fool’s gold, Ponzi schemes, and swamp land in Florida. Any other inheritance besides you is mere “chump change.”

Jesus, the “excellency of knowing you” has re-valued everything. (Phil.3:8). Life is now you and death has become our gain (Phil.1:21). Boasting in weakness is our freedom and posing is slavery. Humility is the way up, pride is the way down, and serving is true greatness (2Cor12:8-10; Phil.2:1-11).

Jesus, you are our quintessential, eternal Hero, Righteous, and Everything. Our “cup of blessing” is a bottomless tankard of mercy, grace, and love. We are heart-palpitating grateful, and want to spend the rest of our years delighting in you and loving to your glory. A Big-Time, So Very Amen.
