Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Two Verses Pregnant with Hope and Encouragement  SCOTTY SMITH “It is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come…” (2Cor.1:21-22) Gracious Father, these two verses are a duet of doxology and praise, a twosome of “Whew!” and “Hallelujah!”, a couplet of cascading grace and Gospel-riches. What are you declaring to be true in 2Cor.1:21-22? You bought us with the currency of your grace, sealed us as your treasure and inheritance, and will “make us stand firm in Christ” all the way Home. Abba, I have to double-dip on that affirmation. You don’t just enable us to stand firm; you “make us” stand firm. Thank you. Every day (24/365) your Spirit is telling us about our belovedness to you. Not only is that true, but the Spirit is also the firstfruits and guarantee of a future Jesus secured for us that is off-the-charts, imagination-enthralling magnificent. Nothing should inform, enflame, and transform our lives more than the truth and goodness of this glorious Gospel—when life is easy-breezy and when it is stress-filled and unbearable. Indeed, thank you for preparing us for the raptures and ruptures of life between Jesus’ resurrection and return. We should expect seasons of “inward groaning and eager waiting.” Like a woman in childbirth who experiences both agony and anticipation without an epidural—but with the great joy of a guaranteed outcome (Rom.8:23). Hallelujah! Furthermore, Abba, you have told us to encourage one another with this hope, and to work for each other’s joy (1Thess.4:18; 2Cor.1:24). Until you send Jesus back to finish making all things new, our Gospel-friendships are going to matter more than they ever have. Thank you, Abba, and So Very Amen. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Don’t Dare Have Jesus Just As Your Alpha but Not Your Omega SCOTTY SMITH   “Since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses, let’s strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let’s run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes (Gorilla-Glued) on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith.” (Heb.12:1-2)    Lord Jesus, wearing the lens of the Gospel radically impacts every Scripture we read. For example, I used to think of this “cloud of witnesses” as a select group of spiritual giants looking down from heaven cheering us on in our sweaty striving to join them one day. Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Esther, King David, the Apostle Paul, Euodia and Syntyche (Phil.4:2-3)—all winners, now motivating us to do more try harder, persevere, hold on, and finish strong. What a distorted, me-centered, Christ-absent, Gospel-void view of the Christian life.    I focused more on the race than your grace—vacillating between feelings of pride when I did well, and feelings of shame when I failed well. I related to you as the Author but not Perfecter of my faith, the Alpha but not the Omega of my Gospel, the Beginning but not the End of my salvation—my forgiveness but not my righteousness. Hallelujah, you rescued me—and still do when I drift, default, jump, or run back into performance-based spirituality.    The one thing ALL the saints listed above had in common was their consuming, desperate, 100% need of a salvation of which you are the source and supplier, meaning and measure, heart and heartbeat. They (like us) were saints not because they were “saintly” but because they were a mess needing Abba’s mercies and your perfect righteousness, Jesus.    Abraham was saved by you before he knew your name (Romans 4:1-25); we are saved because we do know your name and abandon ourselves to you 100%. Jesus, we’ll never over-believe it, over-celebrate it, over-rest in it—you are our “righteousness, holiness, and redemption” (1Cor.1:30). So VERY Amen. Wish you had a roundup of our best content? Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Having a Good News Heart in a Bad News World SCOTTY SMITH “Those who fear the Lord won’t be afraid of bad news. Their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord—their hearts are secure. The only fear they welcome is the fear of the Lord.” (pp. Ps.112:7-8)   Heavenly Father, I am SO drawn to the heart reflected in this Scripture—a steadfast heart beating in circumstance-tested body. Having a fearless calm in the midst of difficult people and threatening events—possessing a Good News heart in a bad news world. By the truth and power of the Gospel, make that our hearts, Father. Free us to trust you more and fret outcomes less. You’ve made us righteous in Christ; now make us less shakable when “shaky” things are happening. The Gospel won’t make us dangerously oblivious or naively indifferent; but it will make us less knee-jerk reactionary and more accepting that you’ve “got this one” and everything else well in hand. Indeed, you never call us to live in denial, but you always call us to live with greater delight in you. Father, help us accept bad news (as well as anger-fueling, joy-depleting, and hope-sabotaging news), not with shrugged shoulders but with bent knees. Not with passive resignation but with active surrender to the God who does all things well. The Gospel won’t make us less human, but it will make us more likely to trust you when we feel vulnerable, weak, stressed, and/or afraid. Thank you, Father. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH The Whole, Holy Enchiladas SCOTTY SMITH   “And this is the plan: At the right time, God will bring everything together in Christ—everything in heaven and on earth.” Eph. 1:10     Heavenly Father, you have never over-promised anything; but we certainly can under-believe anything—especially promises like you made in Ephesians 1:10. We own our weakness, but we’re grateful we’re more “owned” by you and everything you have planned for us and the entire cosmos through Jesus.    Jesus is the “Yes!” to all your promises (2Cor.1:20)—not the “Might Be,” “Could Be,” or “Let’s Wait and See.” Though life often feels like a vulnerability factory, an out-of-control rollercoaster, and/or a really bad sitcom—that is just our way-limited, fear-soaked, Gospel-dementia perspective. If we could only see what you see, know what you know, delight in what you have decreed—we’d do more than offer a sigh of relief; we might just start break-dancing in the Spirit.    Father, make Ephesians 1:10 the GPS setting of our hearts, rocket fuel for our peace, and pure oxygen for our hope. Thank you for setting a Day when everything will be united, summed-up, “shalom-ed,” perfected in Jesus. What a blessed Day that will be… “Cinco de Awesome” We will see Jesus and we will be completely like him (1Jn.3:1-3) Our tears will be wiped, pain redeemed, and everything about us healed (Rev.21:1-5) No more worries, wars, regrets, shame, hurting, or hurting others (Isa.11:9)—no more partial knowing and loving. No more political/ideological “Right” or “Left”—only Jesus as the Alpha and Omega and Everything in Between. Hallelujah, you have left nothing to chance but all things to Christ! (Heb.1:1-2).  The earth will be filled with your glory, beloved family, and perfect everything. (Hab.2:14).   Until then Abba, renew and deepen our love for Jesus and our compassion for others.
