Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH It Hurts So Good SCOTTY SMITH "I will not leave you as orphans…'" Jn.14:18 Lord Jesus, it's only been 24 hours since I got word that 101-year-old Rose Marie Miller—my spiritual mom for over a half-century, has graduated into your presence. What do I feel? Incredible peace, deep joy, and a tiny bit of envy that she is with you and with Jack who preceded her by 30 years. But they are not alone, for they are in that grand gathering of "thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly," and the growing multitude believers "whose spirits have been made perfect and whose names are written in heaven" (Heb.12:22-23). Glory… on Gospel-steroids! Hallelujah that heaven is real not hype, our true Home not a religious metaphor, a sensational destination not a sentimental spin. As in the words of Asaph, heaven is "more to be desired than anything on earth" (Ps.73:25); and as the Apostle Paul mused, "better by far" than anything we can hope or imagine (Phil.1:23). So do I feel a little envy? Heck yes. Maybe more than a little, Jesus. But I'm also feeling a healthy, real sadness that I want to own, sit in, and steward. Jack and Rose Marie made your promise of rescue from "orphan like living" real to me. You promised not to leave us alone when you left to be with our Father. You promised to send the "Spirit of sonship" (Romans 8) into our world and hearts; and Hallelujah you have done so. Thank you a gazillion times over. But as a part of how that grand promise of "Sonship" plays out—you also give us wingless angels, spiritual moms and dads, two-legged conduits of your grace. They are Gospel-astonished, weakness-owning, loving-from-the-heart friends. That's who Rose Marie and Jack have been to me. Imperfect people loving me with your perfect grace. I deeply, sorely miss Jack. Now I'll miss deeply, sorely Rose Marie. But not for long, for we are nearer to heaven than ever. We are nearer to your return to finish making all things new. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH Corralling Our Thinking into the Ranch and Rodeo of the Gospel SCOTTY SMITH "We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." (2 Cor.10:5). " Be transformed by the renewing of your minds." (Rom.12:2)    Lord Jesus, this may be the first time I've noticed what Paul is actually saying in this passage. Having our thought-life   obey you is different from having a curious mind about Christian stuff; and it's way more than simply getting a better theology and memorizing Bible verses—each of which is awesome. Thinking is a relational commitment, not just a cognitive exercise. Our thinking is to obey you, not impress you or anyone else.    Indeed, our minds were created to give you obedient love, Jesus—not just get filled up with more doctrine and spiritual data. Indeed, an informed and enflamed heart go hand-in-hand. So, if our thinking is to be "captivated" with you, Jesus, and obey only you, what is your competition? When our minds don't "mind you," who or what do they mind?   At the top of the list is the wannabe trinity of " me-myself-and-I." When my thinking is obedient to me (versus you)—my fears, hurts, values, prejudices, and idols become the "corral" where my thoughts are taken held captive. And there in the "corral" of the unrenewed mind, they feed, breed, and heed all kinds of thinking that contradicts your beauty, goodness, and truth.    Jesus, I've done that "ranch and rodeo" long enough. Free me and my friends to be transformed by the continual renewing of our minds. When our thoughts obey you, Jesus, we see you, ourselves, others, and the world through Gospel-eyes. Our emotions get healed and fueled with grace. Our choices get shaped by you and the things that matter to you. May it be so, Lord Jesus. Yea, verily, and So Very Amen. The term is increasingly used to describe the unique dynamics of twenty-first century culture. We've moved beyond postmodernism and entered the metamodern era. But what does that mean? And why does it matter for Christians?    It matters because metamodernism helps explain the real postures, aesthetics, and sensibilities of 21st-century people—the people we're trying to reach with the gospel; the people we're discipling in our churches.    Metamodernism can be a heady concept, but it's easiest to understand by looking at examples from pop culture. In this cohort we'll primarily look at movies as an entry point for understanding what metamodernism is, how it feels, and what it looks like in the arts. Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH When Our Cares Feel "Gorilla-glued" to Us or Like Boomerangs SCOTTY SMITH    " Cast your anxieties on Abba—drop them, leave them, or have them willingly pried from your hand and heart. Because Abba cares for you like no one else—give him your cares, backpack of burdens, and/or truck load of worries."  (1Peter 5:7-ish)    Heavenly Father, the best part of this much-loved verse are these four words, " he cares for you." How do you care for us? In a 300-word prayer I can only mention a few of the priceless ways you love and care for us.    On the cusp of celebrating Easter, I'll start with your gift of Jesus to us and for us. There is no greater expression of your care for us than the Gospel—Jesus, himself.  You gave us our first birth and our new birth—canceling our sin, not us. You declare us both righteous in Christ and beloved in your family. You have numbered our hairs, sorrows, and days. You know our fears, bottle our tears, and will wipe each of them on the perfect Day. No one cares for us like you, Abba.    But care-casting is complicated. Some cares feel "Gorilla-glued" to our hands and stories—we don't know how to let go of them. Some feel like boomerangs—they keep coming back. If we can't or won't cast them, please grab, rip, or steal them from our foolish grip. Here's a few "cares" we need to recognize and surrender to you: The burden of assuming responsibility for anybody's health, happiness, and holiness. Life in a world that feels more scary and random right now than controlled by your heart and hand. The vulnerability of transitions—those we planned for and those we didn't see coming. The emotions and changes that come with aging—our own aging, and the aging journey of our loved ones.    Abba, we know care-casting isn't the same as shirking responsibility, entering denial, or running away. It's to be honest about our limits, thankful for your limitlessness, and cast our whole self on you. We do all 3 right now… So Very Amen. Wish you had a roundup of our best content? Heavenward SCOTTY SMITH One Appointment That Will Never Be Broken SCOTTY SMITH    " God hasn't appointed us for wrath, but to receive full salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that whether we are awake or 'asleep' we might live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." (1Thess.5:9–11)    Merciful Father, there are some appointments we dread like the black plague, others we tolerate like a root canal, others we celebrate as the highlight of our week. But there is one appointment on the books that we're looking forward to with mounting joy and with exponential gratitude.    In your sovereign grace and quintessential kindness, you've booked your children for the Day of fullness of our salvation. On the perfectly timed Day, you will perfect your work in us and throughout all creation. Hallelujah for the one appointment written with the ink of grace by your loving hand on the only calendar that really matters— the book of life.    And you did it all, Abba, so that whether we are "awake or asleep"—alive or dead—we might live with you. Not just live in heaven—but that we might enjoy a relationship of perfect intimacy with you. That you desire us is overwhelming, but that you actually delight in us 10,000 times more overwhelming.    Because Jesus fulfilled his "appointment" to be the sin-bearing Lamb of God and our righteousness-giving Savior, your love for us is more certain than any other appointment on our calendar. Astonishing—Jesus took the wrath we deserve to give us the grace we could never earn. Hallelujah!    Abba, in light of this good news and unbreakable appointment, ignite within each of us a passion and commitment to encourage each other more and more and more. May we heap 10 times more encouragement on each other than whines and worries, judgments and criticisms. Building up, not tearing down, is the way of the Gospel. Yea, Verily, and So Very Amen.
