Cannot, Dare Not, Must Not Live Isolated Lives
SCOTTY SMITH

Dear friends, keep building each other up in your most holy faith—in the truth, goodness, and beauty of the Gospel. Don’t just say prayers, pray by the power of the Holy Spirit—loving and adoring Jesus together, constantly bringing each other to the throne of grace.

As friends, crave Jesus’ return with patience and hope. Rest, revel, and be renewed in the love of God together—all the way Home. Eternal life began for you the moment God hid your lives in Christ, and he will complete his good work in you.“ (Conflation and Paraphrase of Jude 20-22, Jn.17:3, Col.3:1-4, Phil.1:6)

Dear Jesus, we cannot, dare not, must live this life without Gospel-formed and grace-fueled relationships. Thank you for our friends who love Mahjong, fishing, and college football; afterschool tutoring and serving the poor, art crawls and book clubbing, going on mission trips and going antique hunting, great cigars and Classic Rock and Roll, philanthropy and pickleball, being foodies and being generous.

But here’s the deal as September 2026 begins: We can do all of these wonderful things with all kinds of dear people—AND still live as posers and pretenders, religious but grace-flyweights, busy but friendship-barren—active but isolated and insulated from real relationships and intimacy with you. That’s not okay, Jesus.

It’s not that life is to be one non-ending Bible study, “Kumbaya-fest,  and prayer meeting, but no one loves the things we enjoy more than you. Indeed, you have given us all things to richly enjoy (1Tim.6:17). Jesus, invade, inhabit, infuse every area of our lives with your truth, goodness, and beauty. Renew our first love for you and others. Restore our joy in you, Jesus. Help us make a priority of having and nurturing friendships in which:

  • Weakness is welcomed and grace is essential (2Cor.1:3-11)
  • Prayer is regular, mutual, and honest (James 5:16)
  • Encouragement is vital, specific, and increasing (Heb.10:25)

Hallelujah, thank you, and So Very Amen

“Jesus completely saves those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.” (Heb. 7:25)

“The Holy Spirit himself intercedes for us with groaning’s too deep for words. He knows the will of God and prays accordingly.” (Pp Rom. 8:26)

“Epaphras always is wrestling in prayer for you.” (Col.4:12)

Heavenly Father, as we think about the multiple ways you love and care for your children, few things create a deeper sigh of relief, sense of peace, and smile of joy than knowing the prayer-provision you make for us—in heaven, on earth—even inside of us.

Lord Jesus, because you live forever to pray for us, we abandon ourselves to you on this last Monday in August 2026. We would pray for ourselves what you pray for us if we knew what you know. Your hands aren’t tied. Your knowledge is perfect. Your love is constant. All your prayers will always be answered, Jesus. Hallelujah on Gospel steroids!

Holy Spirit, thank you for your nonstop praying inside of us—especially when we don’t know what to pray or even want to pray. Far from despising our weakness, that’s where you meet us. As we cry out to God with words of desperation, confusion, or joy—reshape our prayers and wing them heavenward. Your groans are more eloquent than our words.

Abba, nothing and no one can sabotage your sovereignty, warp your will, divert your decrees for us—and for your world. We don’t work to get your attention; you freely and fully give us your affection. We don’t have to gussy up or buck up when we come before you. Such is the wonder of your daily mercies for us and the culture of prayer itself.

Lastly, thank you for the intercessors you have placed in our lives—those like Epaphras (Col.4:12), Samuel (1Sam.12:23), and Paul (Phil.1:3-4)—who pray with great joy, Gospel-passion, and amazing faithfulness. “Increase their tribe” and make us that kind of friend too. So Very Amen.

“I will make peace your governor and well-being your ruler. The sounds of violence will never be heard in your land again. Ruin and destruction will not happen within your borders. The walls of your city will be Salvation and your gates Praise. (pp Isa.60:17-18)

Lord Jesus, we are SO ready for the reality described in these verses to be our government, geography, and grace. How long before there are no more warring nations or even wagging tongues—no abuses of power or abuse in any form? When will every expression of fight, flight, and freeze be replaced with reconciliation, renewal, and righteousness? The eternal Day when we will only have healthy, caring, kind, relationships?

Jesus, we yearn for the Day when peace will be our Premier, grace will be our governor, mercy will be our Prime Minister, kindness will be our King, love will be our Leader—for that will be the Day you return to finish making all things new and beautiful (Rev.21:1-5). How soon can you possibly make this happen, Lord?

Until then free us to live by the Gospel not by the sword, by the way of your cross not by the ways of mere men, by faith in you not our fears within. Though it’s not apparent to the naked, unrenewed, grace-lite eye—you are already ruling the world with your truth and grace. You are sovereign over kings and catastrophes, all our children and every cancer, eternal election and the mid-term elections too, today’s sorrows and tomorrow’s “Hallelujah’s!”

May the Gospel be more precious to us than ever. May “faith expressing itself in love” be our default and delight mode. May your Spirit produce such an abundance of kindness and gentleness in us it will shock even us. May loving you be our highest priority and loving others be its clearest overflow. So Very Amen.

I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” Luke 7:47

Lord Jesus, it’s as daily, profound, and freeing as this: First: Because you’ve forgiven ALL of our sins, we should love you with ever-growing awe, perpetual gratitude, and unwavering delight. Second: You call and us to become the most humble and gentle, compassionate and loving person in any of our relationships. Lord may it be so more and more until you take us Home.

Jesus, by the power of your Spirit, keep us constantly aware of how much you’ve forgiven us and cherish us. Don’t let us minimize the wonder of our forgiveness by thinking our sins are less offensive and numerous than other people’s.

Convict us quickly when we indulge an irritable spirit or a judgmental attitude towards others. Help us respond mercifully and grace-fully to a wide range of scenarios and personalities: Unintentional oversights and intentional slights. Unkind words spoken and caring words left unspoken. Being ignored by people we love or target practice for people who deserve zero power over our heart.

Jesus, in our anger keep us from sinning. In our pain keep us from blaming. In our disappointment keep us from sulking. This isn’t denial about real issues; it’s delighting more fully in you. Only your love is better than life. Only your love will never let go of us. Only your love was, is, and ever will be enough to fill the Jesus-shaped vacuum in our hearts.

Today and tomorrow, we’ll either fix our eyes adoringly on you, selfishly on ourselves, or critically on others. We choose to see, savor, and be deeply satisfied in you, Jesus. Hallelujah, thank you, and So Very Amen.
